Showa American Story, NEKCOM’s action RPG set in a Japanese-dominated 1980s America overrun by the undead, returned at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 with a character-driven trailer and a card listing PS5 and Steam with a wishlist prompt. 2P Games’ logo sits alongside NEKCOM’s; no release date was shown.
The trailer is framed by a narrator called “The President”, whose lines run as subtitles: “it’s a dream, a dream drunk on bourbon, refusing to wake up”, “a bunch of shallow minds who’ve only lived for a few decades saying that animation is childish”, and, over a burning bridge, “is this the twenty-first century we once dreamed of?” A song credited as “The Sky of the 21st Century” plays underneath.
The cast cards introduce Choko Chigusa (voiced by Yoko Hikasa), the tank-top-and-denim heroine seen lighting a cigarette in the opening shot; Michael Hero (Hideo Ishikawa), a haunted man in a black shirt; Bubba (Yoshitada Otsuka), a pointing, white-suited showman in a Panama hat; and Akitora Mutsuki (Hikaru Midorikawa), a swordsman drawing a katana under moonlight. Around them: the Golden Gate Bridge on fire, the Palace of Fine Arts, a crowd of white-clad cultists in a valley, a sumo wrestler at a shrine gate, and a “Space Bunny” arcade cabinet.
The gameplay glimpses show third-person combat in a burning trailer park and a red-lit ritual against a trio of masked attackers, a storeroom that unlocks as a base area, cooking and bike-repair menus, and a driving interlude. The tone stays on the game’s usual line between grindhouse and melancholy.
