4A Games brought Metro 2039 to the Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 stage in person, with executive producer Jon Bloch and co-creative director and audio lead Pavel Ulmer introducing a new gameplay trailer for what they called the next chapter in the Metro universe they have been exploring for nearly two decades.

Bloch framed the game against the studio’s circumstances in Ukraine: “Metro has always been a story about preventing war, but now that war is at our doorstep, we have built a story about its consequences and what it takes to survive. The cost of silence, the horror of tyranny, and the price of freedom.” He added that, “of course, as always, there’s monsters”, but that Metro “is about people, what they protect, what they sacrifice, and what remains of them when the world takes almost everything away”.

The trailer opens with “proudly made in Ukraine” and a reminder that the series is inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Metro novels, then settles into first-person footage: a torch-lit station where refugees huddle by fires, propaganda posters for a figure called Hunter, a bureaucrat at a desk with a red telephone, and a surface of collapsed tower blocks and rusting cars under grey skies. Winged, insect-like mutants swarm across a ruined mall, and the player’s rifle is shown being modified on a workbench. The dialogue that carried over the stream: “I’m looking for someone, I need information”, “then you’ve come to the wrong place”, “so this is Hunter’s bright future: monsters in the radiation, that’s all that’s left up there”, and “the Spartans wear wolves on their helmets. I’m something worse.”

The trailer’s closing card gives a release window of February 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, with a wishlist prompt and the address metro2039.com.

Metro 2039 is playable at 4A’s booth on the Gamescom show floor this week, and the developers showed a fully wearable replica Spartan helmet that will ship in the collector’s edition.
