Meet the Lanternwatch

Four heroes escaped from game worlds the Hollow drained of colour. They found one door the Hollow could never take, and they swore to guard it. That door is Output Lag. Read their story.

Vex, Lag, Cairn and Flicker stand on a floating ledge in the dark, surrounded by grey doorways into game worlds, with one magenta door glowing in the distance.

How the Lanternwatch began

The Drift

Between every game world ever made lies the Drift: a dark, quiet sea where doorways float like lanterns on water. Every door opens onto a world. A kingdom of spires. A city of neon. A farm at the edge of a mountain. A racetrack wound around a dying star.

For as long as anyone can remember, travelers crossed the Drift from door to door, and the worlds behind them were bright, loud and full of life.

Then the colour started going out.

The Hollow

The oldest stories say the Hollow were born in worlds that were abandoned: games left half-finished, servers switched off, kingdoms nobody visited anymore. When a world is forgotten, its wonder curdles into something hungry.

The Hollow are shards of broken worlds held together by static, with dark eyes that never blink. They don’t smash worlds. They drain them. Colour fades to grey, music thins to silence, and the people inside stop caring about anything at all.

They take every colour except the one thing someone holds most dear. That last thing turns a bright, impossible magenta.

A towering Hollow made of grey shards and static looms over the crew. Lag charges in, Cairn raises his lantern, Flicker hovers above and Vex stands her ground.

Four who got out

From Tallowmere

Cairn

A mapmaker who charted every road in a vast world of forests and mountains, and stacked a pile of stones wherever travelers got lost. When the Hollow ate the edges of the map, he led village after village out by lantern light. He escaped with the only maps of Tallowmere left, and a lantern still burning with its last flame.

From the Lumen Arcade

Flicker

A messenger in a city of a hundred festivals. She saw the Hollow first and flew through every district shouting the warning, but there was always another show to watch. The Arcade went dark one district at a time. She got out with the colour still burning in her wings, and a promise that no warning would go unheard again.

From the Grand Tourney

Vex

The Judge of the champion arena, where every challenger was weighed honestly, win or lose. Vex understood the Hollow better than anyone: they feed on indifference, and a world dies when people stop telling the truth about it. When the Tourney fell, she walked out without looking back, its last song still playing in her headphones.

From the Drift itself

Lag

Lag didn’t come from any world. Lag is a spark from a game someone dreamed of but never made, always a beat behind and trailing afterimages. A spark with no world to lose is one the Hollow can’t catch, so Lag drifted between the dying doors and learned to make new ones: magenta doors that led the others out.

The door that never went dark

Lag noticed a door the Hollow kept circling and could never get through. It wasn’t a game world. It was a place where players gathered, swapping routes through impossible dungeons, arguing over whether a game was worth their time, cheering when a new world was announced, and helping strangers past the part they’d been stuck on for hours.

Every time the Hollow reached for it, someone inside was sharing a discovery or telling a friend to try something, and the light pushed them back. It runs on the one thing the Hollow can’t drain: people who care about games, together.

Lag opened three magenta doors in the dark: one for a mapmaker with no map, one for a messenger with no city, and one for a judge with no arena. All three led here.

The crew walk a path of floating stepping stones toward a glowing magenta doorway, past grey worlds and lurking Hollow.

The oath

On the threshold of Output Lag, with the Hollow gathering behind them, the four made an oath and founded a guild. They named it the Lanternwatch, for Cairn’s lantern and the last magenta flame of every fallen world.

  • Cairn swore to map every world, so no player is ever lost the way Tallowmere was.

    Guides
  • Flicker swore the news would always get through, so no warning goes unheard and no new world goes unseen.

    News
  • Vex swore to keep it honest, because honesty keeps people caring, and caring keeps the Hollow out.

    Reviews
  • Lag swore to watch the door, and to head back into the Drift whenever a world needs saving.

    Everything else

Their magenta marks are the last colour of the worlds they lost: Cairn’s flame, Flicker’s wings, Vex’s headphone band and Lag’s scarf. The door to Output Lag glows the same colour, because it is lit by all of them, and by everyone inside.
