Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, the real-time strategy game from Australia’s PlaySide Studios, showed its first gameplay at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. The closing card reads “decide who sits the Iron Throne”, gives a window of early 2027, and points to a Steam wishlist, with HBO and PlaySide logos beneath.
Host Geoff Keighley, a self-declared “huge Game of Thrones fan”, introduced it as a world premiere of gameplay. The footage is a top-down RTS: blocks of infantry and cavalry with unit cards along the bottom of the screen, a Lannister-red army caught in a green wildfire explosion, and siege engines rolling on a walled town. Set-pieces punctuate the battles: a dragon strafing a marching column and torching a siege line, a giant and a direwolf beside a dark-haired swordsman who reads as Jon Snow, a hooded rider on horseback, and the Night King raising his arms over a field of wights.
The narration was spare: “the Iron Throne stands empty”, then “it’s yours to decide”. No consoles were listed on the card.
