Nintendo announced a free update for Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 during the Nintendo Direct September 2026. The title card gives it a release date of September 29, 2026.

The update expands battle mode. Up to four players can join locally in split screen, and the footage shows four-way matches with per-player score and timer readouts. Three new stages are being added. On Katina, players gain control of the platforms and activate a laser to target opponents. On Sector X, the objective is to destroy asteroids while evading waves of energy. On Venom, players scan data modules as they come online, then pull back to escape the surge.

Online play is changing too. A menu shown in the trailer lists local battle, online battle and GameShare options, and describes 4v4 mercenary battles as Star Fox or Star Wolf. An on-screen caption reads “Up to Four Players Online via a Single Nintendo Switch 2”, and the presenter said “up to four players can form a team and join online battles on a single Nintendo Switch 2”. The same menu notes that solo play against CPUs is available offline.

Fine print on the split-screen footage says additional accessories may be required for multiplayer mode and are sold separately. According to the on-screen notice, a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account are required for online features.
