World of Warcraft Forever’s rendering update keeps the art, adds flowing rivers and fog

Clay Stone says Classic's art style is timeless: the work is rivers flowing in Elwynn, fog in Duskwood at night, moonlight through Ashenvale's trees.

World of Warcraft: Forever’s visual update is not a new art style, Associate Production Director Clay Stone said during the World of Warcraft: Forever What’s Next panel at BlizzCon 2026. “I want to make a bold, controversial statement,” Stone said. “We believe WoW Classic’s art style is timeless.” The rendering work is focused on environmental effects instead.

Stone gave three examples: the way rivers now flow in Elwynn Forest, the way fog rolls into Duskwood at night, and the way moonlight breaks through the leaves of the trees in Ashenvale. The screen behind him showed a fog-covered coastline in pink light, a forest stream, and light rays cutting through a dark wood. “It’s the same original Azeroth that players fell in love with all those years ago, with just a few small but powerful effects updates,” he said.

He also addressed the gameplay trailer from the Opening Ceremony, which leaned hard on sunrise and sunset lighting. “Admittedly, we went pretty hard,” Stone said. “Not every zone is going to be set at sunrise or sunset all the time.”

Stone took over the second half of the panel from Nora Mills after her class, item, and racial updates, and framed his section as “things perhaps you weren’t expecting.”
