World of Warcraft: Midnight’s next major content update is called Eclipse, and it is Patch 12.2. Game director Ion Hazzikostas named it on stage at BlizzCon 2026 after a recap of the Worldsoul Saga, then rolled a new cinematic.
The saga is “just about at the midpoint” of its three expansions, he said, with the current patch a “narrative interlude known as a troll patch”.
The reveal
“For a while now, the Worldsoul Saga narrative has been about moving chess pieces into place,” Hazzikostas said. “From here on out, from now until the end of not just Midnight but the whole Worldsoul Saga, it’s all gas, no brakes. And that starts with what comes next. The next major content for Midnight: Eclipse. That is Patch 12.2.”
“Xal’atath has been a step ahead of us at every juncture, but she now stands before her ultimate objective,” he continued. “I think it’s about time we confront her directly.”
The cinematic
It opens on dark ruins where void creatures gather under a shaft of blue light, then finds Xal’atath hovering before a sealed gate of Titan design, two void orbs at her head and her creatures massed below. “You know what I am,” she says. “Now open the gate.” A construct voice answers: “Anomaly. Void corruption critical. Access denied.”
A hooded, bearded keeper appears as a blue hologram over the gate. “How many eons have passed since your creators abandoned this place?” she asks. The keeper replies: “The Titans are eternal. They will never abandon that which lies within. Your incursion is doomed.” Her answer: “Let’s try anyway, shall we?”
She raises a hand wrapped in void energy and chains. “Are you even capable of fear? That suffocating feeling when you realize you will not survive and you are powerless to stop it. I felt that once.” Gold light cracks through the gate. In the shots that follow her black hair has turned auburn and her eyes glow blue, and a tiny figure hovers before a sun-like sphere ringed by a band of runes. She stands with arms spread among her creatures before the Midnight: Eclipse logo closes the piece.
What comes next
Hazzikostas tied the scene to the Hearthstone expansion shown earlier: “Xal’atath has been after our world soul since the days of, well, that Hearthstone expansion we just saw, Black Empire. And now she stands but a toe’s length away from total victory. And if she succeeds in claiming her prize, well, that will be checkmate.”
The rest goes to this afternoon’s Midnight What’s Next panel, which he said will cover “story, systems, and features, including a new standalone game mode on the way, and a peek at the next remix experience coming next year”.
The ceremony gave the name, the patch number, and the cinematic. No release date or PTR timing for Patch 12.2 was given, no zone or raid was named, and no systems were shown. Eclipse follows Patch 12.1.5, which is currently on the PTR.
