Overwatch Season 5 got its full rundown at BlizzCon 2026, where game director Ben Bell and narrative lead Miranda Moyer walked through a new map, the new hero Doctrine, a returning event, unvaulted battle passes, and Roadhog and Sombra reworks, with the season closing out the Reign of Talon story.
Moyer opened with a recap of the year-long story so far: “At the top of this year, Vendetta challenged Doomfist for control of Talon. And after a tough fight, she defeated and presumably killed him.” Vendetta then declared that “Talon is going to take over the world,” blew up Watchpoint: Gibraltar, raided Watchpoint: Grand Mesa, allied with the Hashimoto clan in Japan and sent the Junkers against Busan, while Doomfist, it turns out, was alive: “if you ignore the part where his arm got cut off and he got thrown out a window then he’s doing great,” Moyer said, and he now needs “a figure of his past, Doctrine.”
“If you’ve been waiting for the right time to come back to Overwatch, Season 5 was built for you,” Bell said. First on his list was the new map, Grímsvötn, the Icelandic watchpoint from the Doctrine cinematic. The name was spoken, not shown on a card, so the spelling follows the location named in the short. No map footage was shown.

Season 5 also brings “the return of Dokiwatch,” the anime-styled alternate universe event, and “unvaulted battle passes.” Neither was explained further: nothing was said about which passes come back or what the Dokiwatch return includes.
Then came what Bell called “two of the most requested hero reworks ever. Or should we say re-reworks.” On Roadhog: “Roadhog will now actually be able to help out his team, plus his hook then instant death combo should be a lot less frustrating to play against.”
Sombra “has received her own hotfix, turning her into a support,” a role change covered in its own post. “Everyone here will get to play these reworks as well as the new map, Grímsvötn, all weekend,” the team said of the BlizzCon show floor.
Season 5 “will also see the conclusion of the Reign of Talon story,” which began when Overwatch dropped the 2 from its name in February. After that, “in Season 6 we will release our tenth” hero of 2026, someone “who’s investigating certain parts of the world, certain sectors of the world, you could say,” and “we’re going to keep quiet on any more clues about him just yet.”
What is still unknown: Season 5 was described only as arriving next month, with no date given on stage. No kit details were shown for the Roadhog rework, the Sombra support rework, or Doctrine, no Grímsvötn gameplay was shown, and the Dokiwatch and battle pass items came with no dates or contents. The Hero Deep Dive panel later at BlizzCon is the next place those specifics could surface.
