Diablo V was announced at BlizzCon 2026, closing the Diablo block of the Opening Ceremony with a cinematic, a burning title card, and a second card that reads “Sanctuary Falls 2029”. Joe Shely, called to the stage earlier in the block, put the window in one line afterwards: “Diablo 5 is coming in Spring, 2029.”
The lead-in from the stage, right after the Season of Hell’s Legacy tease: “Today, we’re also ready to look beyond the Age of Hatred. To give you a first glimpse of Diablo’s next era.”
The cinematic
The screen goes black and a narrator opens: “For 30 years, Sanctuary has stood on the edge of oblivion. And every time, heroes have arrived to push the darkness back.” Then a pause: “Until now.”
The first clear image is a figure in dark plate armor crouched in front of a wall of flame, the eye slit of its helm glowing white. Then a bare-headed figure in silhouette against a curtain of fire.
The widest shot is a hall of burning columns. A fire burns on the floor, horned demons stand around it, and a sword is planted in the rubble at the left. Two human figures face the flames with their backs to the camera. Nobody is fighting.
The cinematic ends on a city on fire under a dark sky, towers and spires outlined by the blaze, a crowd of small dark shapes filling the foreground.
The Diablo V logo follows, the V drawn in flame, then a white-out of fire.
Two cards close it: “Sanctuary Falls” on its own, then “Sanctuary Falls” with a burning “2029” beneath it. The card gives the year only; the spring window was spoken on stage.
What was said on stage
Shely gave the premise: “The heroes are gone, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won. For the first time, you won’t be fighting to stop Diablo from taking Sanctuary. You’ll enter a world where he already has.”
He went on: “There are no towns or safe places waiting to protect you. And that changes everything, how you survive, what powers you’re willing to claim and what you’re willing to sacrifice. At the heart of Diablo 5 is the simple question: what must you become when the world has already fallen.”
The team pointed to a panel later today, Diablo V: Forging the Next Era, “where the team will take you inside the fallen Sanctuary we’re building,” covering “how we’re evolving the world, classes, and the story.” Tiffany Wat, who co-hosted the Diablo block, was named as part of it. The segment signed off: “We’ll see you in hell.”
What is still unknown
No platforms were listed on either card or mentioned on stage. No gameplay was shown, and nothing was said about genre or whether the game keeps the series’ top-down action format. Whether Diablo V continues Diablo IV’s story after Lord of Hatred is also open. Spring 2029 is the only date given.
