Overwatch has a new hero. Doctrine was revealed at BlizzCon 2026 at the end of an animated short in which Doomfist leads a Talon strike team into Watchpoint: Grimsvötn, a supermax detention facility in Iceland, to free him. The name was spoken, not shown on a card, so the spelling follows what was said.
What the short showed
Aaron Keller introduced it as a hero “whose connection to Doomfist could set something much bigger in motion.”
The short opens on a location card, “Watchpoint: Grimsvötn, Iceland, Supermax Detention Facility,” a complex on a snowbound mountainside. Guards line a corridor in front of a sealed door. It blows in and Doomfist walks through the dust, followed by Sombra, Reaper, and Widowmaker in white arctic gear.
In a control room, Sombra lays out the plan: “My EMP will fry this thing. And the controls to open his cell. Widow, Reaper, get him out of there. Leave this to me.” A security machine rises through fire, Doomfist fights it, and the squad reaches a cell door marked with a red emblem.
Inside is an old man with white braids and thin red glasses. He opens his eyes, smiles, and reaches out a long-nailed hand. Red energy wraps around him, and when it clears he is standing, decades younger, with dark braids, a high-collared coat, and a mechanical arm. “I would ask what brings you here, but clearly you need a hand,” he says. Someone answers, “Oh, I like this guy.” The last line before the logo is “I should have come sooner.”
The kit, as described on stage
Ben Bell and Miranda Moyer followed. “The ninth hero joining Overwatch this year is Doctrine,” the presenters said. “Doomfist’s newest ally is a support hero armed with a scepter that heals allies and damages enemies. He can rush through battle, shrouded in darkness, while his drones heal teammates and speed up their attacks.” The signature ability is Infuse: “What really sets Doctrine apart is Infuse, which transforms his next ability. Imagine not just dashing, but taking flight.” And the theme: “Who says vampires need to be creepy? In Overwatch, they’re cool. And they come with mechanical bats.”
The key art on the stage screens shows him seated with the scepter under a full moon, bats in the air, Reaper at his side.
When
“He’s coming next month in Season 5,” the team said. Anyone at BlizzCon can play him right now, and “if you’re viewing this at home, Doctrine’s hero trial will start as soon as we finish talking.” A Hero Deep Dive panel later today covers the kit in full. Moyer, the narrative lead, then took over to explain why Doomfist broke into a prison, part of what the team called the first year-long story in Overwatch history.
Still unknown: an exact Season 5 date, the numbers behind the kit, and who Doctrine is to Doomfist beyond “ally.” The short showed him grow young again; the presenters did not explain how.
