Dan Tanguay, Design Director on Diablo, laid out the story setup of Season of Hell’s Legacy during the Diablo IV: What’s Next panel at BlizzCon 2026. Deckard Cain is the ringmaster of what the team calls a 30-year celebration, and he is not a ghost or a construct. He comes back as a return soul, on borrowed time, and believes it is still 1285, the year he died. “He’s old, he’s confused, he’s Deckard,” Tanguay said. Michael Gough voices him again; the name was said on stage, not shown on a slide.
Cain is not the only one back. Three dark wanderers have also returned from the dead, and Cain tasks the player with redeeming their lost souls. That thread leads into the season’s splinters of evil mechanic, covered separately.
Tanguay said the team went all the way back to Diablo 1 from 1996 and combed through 30 years of moments to bring back dungeons, bosses, and NPCs. Leah from Diablo III is one of them, though not in the flesh. “Leah’s back as a memory,” Tanguay said, adding that more returning NPCs would be covered later in the panel.
