Diablo V’s art direction follows three visual stories: the past, the present and hell’s future

Senior art director John Mueller: the past is life after people, the present is where the Dread Commanders burned through, the future is hell breaking in.

Diablo V’s art direction is built around three visual stories, senior art director John Mueller said at the Diablo V panel at BlizzCon 2026. “We have three visual stories we talk about,” he said, and each one got its own concept art on the screen behind the panel.

The first is the past: what has happened to Sanctuary over the last hundred years, “especially the last seven years since Sanctuary fell.” Mueller called it “life after people” and asked “what does it really mean to have this desolate vision of Sanctuary.” The painting for it showed a shattered fortress seen from above, its walls collapsed into a crater.

The second lens is the present, “where evil has touched the world,” Mueller said. “This is where the Dread Commanders have come through and it’s like the forest fire has burned, and what’s left.” This is where the art team “gets to have a ton of fun, because this is where all the really weird dark stuff happens.” Its paintings showed discoloured, overgrown woodland and a frozen ruin streaked with red.

The third is the future: “This is what we’re trying to prevent. This is hell breaking through.” Each Dread Commander “has their own unique look and their own visual theme that they apply to the world,” Mueller said, and the painting for it was a landscape swallowed in red. How many Dread Commanders there are, and what each theme looks like in play, was not shown.
