Diablo V replaces towns with a caravan of survivors that travels with you and grows

Matt Zitterman: the player is the point of safety. Survivors you meet join your wagons as merchants, craftspeople and companions, Rogue Encampment style.

Diablo V has no towns; a caravan of survivors travels with the player instead, executive producer Matt Zitterman said at the Diablo V panel at BlizzCon 2026. With “no safe place” left in a world Diablo has already won, he said, “the player is the point of safety.”

“You and your band of followers are the last remains of humanity and the light in the darkness of Sanctuary,” Zitterman said. Through the campaign you bring “a traveling band of wagons and followers” with you, and “everywhere you stop, there’s going to be a new part of the world to explore.” Survivors you meet join it and “become your merchants, your craftspeople, and your companions.” He compared the feeling to the Rogue Encampment and its campfire in Diablo II.

Senior production director Tiffany Wat said earlier games had a blacksmith waiting in every town, “Bob 1, Bob 2,” but “in Diablo V, all the towns are destroyed. There are not a lot of survivors left. And so when a blacksmith chooses to join your caravan, well, he’s going to be Bob Prime,” a name she said is not final.

The screen showed sepia concept art of spiked wagons crossing a wasteland, then painted portraits of the new caravan cast, among them a woman with a crossbow and an armoured knight. Wat then began introducing one member, a treasure goblin. How large the caravan grows, and whether it can be attacked, was not said.
