Diablo V brings back a procedural overworld and dungeons that change on every visit

Tiffany Wat says Dread Commanders are 'terror forming' Westmarch, so landmarks, monsters and terrain shift each time you return, and all the towns are gone.

Diablo V is bringing back a procedurally generated world, senior production director Tiffany Wat said at the Diablo V panel at BlizzCon 2026. The story “really lends itself to this idea that every time you enter in, the world looks a little bit different and you don’t know quite what to expect,” she said.

Seven years have passed since Diablo conquered Sanctuary, and he and his Dread Commanders “are actively reshaping the land as we know it.” The team’s name for it is “terror forming”. “Every time you return to the same point, the same region that you’ve been before, it’s gonna look a little bit different,” Wat said. “The landmarks that you see, the monsters that you’re running into, all of that terrain, it’s gonna be a little bit different.”

“In Diablo V we’re bringing back the procedural world, both in the dungeons and the overworld,” she said. Old knowledge will not carry over: “None of that information is going to help me today. The only thing beyond the fog of war are more questions.” Wat said game director Joe Shely tells the team “you should never really feel safe,” because “all the towns are gone and Sanctuary is a brutal place to be.”

Behind the panel, the screen showed a blue-lit painting of a skeletal figure enthroned over a field of the dead. How much of the overworld regenerates, and whether it changes per session or on a schedule, was not said.
