Diablo V keeps Diablo unredeemable, and gives the player a unique bond with him

Blizzard weighed a morally gray Lord of Terror and rejected it; the player has a bond with Diablo that brings insight into him and vulnerability to him.

Diablo himself is “a fully developed character” in Diablo V, senior game director Joe Shely said at the Diablo V panel at BlizzCon 2026. “In the past he’s loomed over the story and the confrontation, but he really shapes Diablo V’s story from the beginning,” Shely said, teasing one of the villain’s lines: “Not even death can save you from me.”

Senior production director Tiffany Wat said the team’s first instinct was a morally gray villain in the vein of Sylvanas or Lilith. It did not last. “Pretty quickly we kept arriving at the same conclusion. Diablo is Diablo. He’s the Lord of Terror. He’s not redeemable. He’s not misunderstood. And that gave us a lot of clarity.”

Narrative director Jennifer pointed to the relationship with Lilith and Mephisto in Diablo IV’s story as the model. “We’re going to have a unique bond with Diablo that you find out over the course of the game why and how it came to be,” she said. It gives the player “unique insight into him, but also a unique vulnerability to what he can do to you,” and the game is spent “defining yourself in opposition to the Lord of Terror. Can you resist his influence? Can you turn his powers against him? That’s what the story and the gameplay are gonna let you answer.” What the bond is, and who the player character is, was not said in this segment.
