Diablo V is set in the aftermath of Diablo’s victory, the game’s narrative director, Jennifer, explained at the Diablo V panel at BlizzCon 2026. “This time, you’re not scrambling to protect Sanctuary before Diablo can rise and take it over,” she said. “Other heroes rose up to try to stop Diablo and they failed, and you’re living in the aftermath of what they failed to prevent. You’re living the world that all of the other Diablo games were trying to prevent from happening.”
“Sanctuary has been destroyed, and Diablo has won,” the panel said as the segment opened, and “Westmarch is definitely burning.” Senior art director John Mueller pointed to concept art of crucified angels before the burning spires of Westmarch as the scene that “sets the stakes for the world,” with the art team “doubling down on darkness.”
The darkness has a counterweight. “We still need to make Sanctuary a place that’s worth defending,” Jennifer said. Defeating Mephisto worked: “There was a golden age of Sanctuary, a time where Sanctuary was a better place than we’ve ever seen it. And you could make it that again if you can beat the odds and defeat Diablo this time.”
The story pulls back the curtain on the Eternal Conflict, a Sanctuary “caught between Diablo’s aggression and the almost equally damaging indifference of the heavens.” Players will “make humanity a player in this,” she said, “find an ally among the angels and even turn the powers of hell back against itself.” Which angel, and how, was not said.
