Diablo V has no ordinary quest givers: every side quest comes from a member of the player’s caravan, narrative director Jennifer said at the Diablo V panel at BlizzCon 2026. The caravan, she said, “is a huge part of the way that we balance this darker world with making it a world worth saving.”
“There are no normal civilians left, which means you’re never going to run into a quest giver standing at the side of the road waiting to ask you to do them a favor,” she said. “Instead, your caravan characters become the source of all of your side content, and every one of them is a part of the story.”
Each caravan member is “an interesting, multifaceted person who you chose to bring into your caravan, into your life,” and the quests they hand out “are part of their personal story.” Her rule for the design: “every side quest that you do in this game is important. It matters because it matters to someone who matters to you.” She shorthanded it as “the real hell is the friends you make along the way.”
Host Johanna Faries summed the segment up as “Sanctuary is occupied and survival is quite personal” before moving the panel to classes. The screens behind the couch showed the painted caravan portraits, labelled concept art earlier in the panel. How many caravan members there are, whether any can be refused or lost, and whether their quests are optional was not said.
