The Borderlands series has passed 100 million units sold. Gearbox announced the milestone in a message to the community: “the Borderlands franchise has officially crossed 100 million units sold!” The same message says the team is “cooking hard on more Borderlands 4 content for next year,” though it does not yet say what that content is.
Randy Pitchford expected Borderlands 4’s launch to do it “easy”
The number took longer than Gearbox’s CEO predicted. In an August 2025 interview, shortly before Borderlands 4 came out, Randy Pitchford said: “we will break 100 million units with this launch, easy.” Gearbox’s message now comes “just more than 12 months since Borderlands 4 launched.” It does not say exactly when the series crossed the line, so the milestone may have arrived before today’s announcement.
Year One brought two Story Packs and two new Vault Hunters
Gearbox says Borderlands 4’s first year is complete. It included “two Story Packs, five Bounty Packs, two new Vault Hunters, and a number of new features and activities.” Until the next batch of content arrives, “Weekly Activity refreshes and Community Challenges will continue.”
Gearbox is asking fans which stories “deserve a payoff”
The message also looks past Borderlands 4 at the series as a whole, with three questions for players: “Where can we take it next? What characters do you want to spend more time with? What stories deserve a payoff?” Gearbox asks fans to share their answers on social media and points them to its Gearbox Devcast, where the team responds to community feedback.
Don’t expect answers soon. In Gearbox’s words, “big plans take time, and we need some room to work.” The message also says nothing about the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4, which remains indefinitely delayed.
