GTA 6 is set in Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida. Rockstar has officially named and shown six places so far, from the neon of Vice City to the swamps of the Grassrivers and the backwoods of Mount Kalaga. Here’s everything Rockstar has confirmed about the GTA 6 map, using only its own site, trailers and screenshots, and what we still don’t know before the November 19 launch.

Quick start: the GTA 6 map at a glance

  • State: Leonida, which Rockstar calls “the sunshine state” and sums up as “the darkest side of the sunniest place in America.”
  • Official places so far: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.
  • Biggest city: Vice City, back for the first time since 2002’s GTA: Vice City.
  • Map size: Rockstar hasn’t said how big the map is or how it compares to GTA V.
  • Full map: Rockstar hasn’t released an official map image. We’ll update this guide at launch on November 19.

Where is GTA 6 set?

The whole game takes place in the state of Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional take on Florida. On its official site, Rockstar invites players to “tour a few of the must-see destinations across the sunshine state,” and the story sends Jason and Lucia into “a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.” So unlike Vice City in 2002, which was one city, GTA 6 covers a full state with cities, islands, wetlands, small towns and a national park.

Vice City

Rockstar’s tagline for Vice City is “Everything in Excess,” and its description is the most detailed of any place so far: “We’re a long way from the ’80s, but Vice City is still the sun and fun capital of America.”

Rockstar calls it “the glamour, hustle, and greed of America captured in a single city” and names several neighborhoods and landmarks:

  • Ocean Beach, with “pastel art deco hotels and bright white sands”
  • Little Cuba and its “bustling panaderías”
  • The Tisha-Wocka flea market, home of “bootleg brands”
  • The VC Port, “the cruise ship capital of the world”
  • Southside Vice City, where one of the game’s bonus missions has you raid a gang’s compound

Rockstar also mentions the Vercetti Estate, a nod to Tommy Vercetti from the original Vice City, as the source of a pair of bonus revolvers. Local legend Boobie Ike and rising producer Dre’Quan Priest are both tied to the Vice City scene.

Leonida Keys

The Leonida Keys are Rockstar’s “Gateway to Paradise,” a tropical island chain where “the dress code is casual, the bars are loaded.” Rockstar says life there “isn’t flashy but it’s easy,” and warns that you’re “right on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America.” Rockstar’s screenshot shows islands linked by long road bridges, with the Vice City skyline in the distance.

The Keys matter to the story too. Jason ended up “in the Keys doing what he knows best, working for local drug runners,” and Brian Heder, “a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys,” still runs product through his boat yard.

Grassrivers

The Grassrivers are Leonida’s answer to the Everglades. Rockstar’s heading is “Welcome to the Wetlands,” and it calls the area “the untamable jewel of Leonida’s crown.” Its description: “You never know what lies beneath the surface of this primordial expanse. The gators may be the most famous attraction, but there are far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries among the mangroves.” Rockstar’s screenshots show airboats, waterfront buildings on piers, and the Vice City skyline close enough to see.

Port Gellhorn

Rockstar describes Port Gellhorn as “Leonida’s forgotten coast,” a former vacation spot full of “cheap motels, shut-down attractions, and empty strip malls.” There’s “a new economy in this once-popular vacation spot,” Rockstar says, “fueled by malt liquor, painkillers, and truck stop energy drinks. Jump on a dirt bike and hold onto your wallet.”

Ambrosia

Ambrosia sits “in the heart of Leonida,” where Rockstar says “American industry and old school values still reign supreme,” whatever the cost. It’s a factory town: “The Allied Crystal sugar refinery provides the jobs, while the local biker gang provides almost everything else.” Rockstar’s tagline is “The battle for the health and wealth of Leonida begins here,” and its night shot of the skyline shows the refinery’s smoke stacks.

Mount Kalaga National Park

Mount Kalaga is the northern edge of the map. Rockstar calls it “Wild, Wild Country” with “room to breathe on the state’s northern fringes,” and describes it as “a national landmark up against the state’s northern border” that “offers prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails.” The people are part of the draw: “In the lush surrounding backwoods, hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals live far from the prying eyes of the government.” The Ultimate Edition’s ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy is pitched for “the backwoods of Mount Kalaga and beyond.”

Watson Bay, Lake Leonida and other places Rockstar has named

Rockstar has named a few more places in passing, mostly in its editions and character text:

  • Watson Bay: home of the Paradise Garage, an Ultimate Edition property with a weapon locker and a place to stash stolen goods for fencing.
  • Lake Leonida: where an Ultimate Edition mod shop specializes in off-road modifications.
  • Leonida Penitentiary: where Lucia served time before the story begins.

Our editions guide covers what’s in each edition.

How big is the GTA 6 map?

Rockstar hasn’t given a size, and it hasn’t officially compared Leonida to GTA V’s San Andreas. Fans have pieced together their own map projects from trailer footage and screenshots, but those are estimates, not official figures. What Rockstar has shown makes the scale clear in a different way: a major city, an island chain, wetlands, a coastal town, an inland industrial town and a national park on the state’s northern border, linked by highways and long bridges. We’ll update this section with real measurements once the game is out.

GTA 6 map vs GTA 5

GTA V was set in San Andreas: the city of Los Santos and the countryside of Blaine County. GTA 6 swaps California for Florida and puts more of the world on and around the water, with islands, wetlands and coastline in four of the six places Rockstar has named. Until the game is out, any claim that one map is bigger than the other is a guess.

Where Rockstar has shown the map

  • Trailer 1 (December 4, 2023): the first look at Vice City and Leonida.
  • Trailer 2 (May 6, 2025): a much longer look at Leonida and the people who live there.
  • The official site (rockstargames.com/VI): the six places above, each with a description and screenshots.

Still unknown: map size, open regions and borders

  • The size of the map and how it compares to GTA V
  • Whether the whole map is open from the start
  • The exact borders between regions and any places Rockstar hasn’t revealed
  • How the water, islands and interiors work in play

We’ll update this guide at launch on November 19 with the full map. Until then, see our GTA 6 everything we know guide, the release date, time and pre-load guide, and our GTA 6 game page.
