GSC Game World has released Update 2.1 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, and the two features players asked for most after August’s 2.0 overhaul are both in it. The Zone Lookout adds a setting to push A-Life NPC visualisation and streaming distance far beyond the default, and a fast travel system that lets you tag along with squad leaders for a fee. The update is live now on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, and GSC published the full patch notes on Steam.
NPC and streaming distance presets run from Recommended to Maximum
The headline setting lives under Game options as “NPC & streaming distance.” GSC’s showcase video shows presets including Recommended, Dynamic and Maximum. Dynamic adjusts the streaming distance to your available system resources to keep performance stable, while the game’s own description of Maximum reads: “Provides the maximum possible streaming and NPC visualization distance, but puts an extreme load on your system.”
There is a warning attached. GSC says advanced settings “may cause story quest instability, reduce game performance, and lead to excessive memory usage or software crashes,” and that the available options may be limited by your Environment draw distance graphics setting. The number of presets can also differ between PC and console. Binoculars have been updated to work with the longer distances, their identification range grows with the setting, and the audible range of distant gunfights now scales with it too.
Fast travel means paying a squad leader 600 to 3,500 coupons
The fast travel system works through squad leaders you meet in the Zone rather than a map menu. Talk to one and you get a list of where their squad is heading, each with a price. In GSC’s footage, a leader called Sashko Visitor offers the Energiya Vehicle Station for 600 coupons, the Chemical Plant for 2,150 and Zalissya for 3,500. GSC’s own line on it: “For a reasonable price in coupons. Well… mostly reasonable. The Zone has no freebies.”
Veterans will recognise the idea from Call of Pripyat, where you could travel with squads to their destinations, and the Reddit thread for the update filled up with players saying they had waited twelve years for it.
PS5 missing-NPC bugs and Rostok spawn floods are fixed
The patch notes run long on fixes. On PlayStation 5, a string of missions could lose their key characters after the 2.0 update, including Varan, Squint, Scar’s squad, Sava, Shcherba, Doctor Kaimanov, Zotov and Banzai, and GSC lists each one as fixed. The massive NPC and mutant spawns at Rostok and the excess mercenaries at Duga are gone, armed NPCs no longer aim in odd directions, and A-Life NPCs and mutants should stop getting stuck in mid-air.
Elsewhere, anomalies now respect the new streaming distances, dead bodies should no longer spawn in front of your eyes, a memory leak caused by a crowded map is closed, and the CNPP arch-anomaly got a visual pass. GSC also fixed gamepad use on portable PCs and Steam Machine, scope textures that blurred when aiming down sights, and the achievement for killing every mutant type, which no longer has to be done in one session.
