Owlcat Games and Another Angle Games released a new environmental trailer for Shadow of the Road, their upcoming tactical RPG set in 19th-century Japan where ancient heritage clashes with steam-powered modernization.
The game depicts an alternative version of Japan’s Bakumatsu Period, a country fractured by war between the Shōgun and Emperor. The East Nippon Company has equipped the Emperor’s forces with advanced mechs, while kami and yōkai from Japanese folklore pursue their own agendas. Players lead a group of ronin warriors recruited by Tokugawa’s spymaster to protect a boy with uncontrollable powers.
Shadow of the Road features turn-based combat with a samurai tactical focus. Each team member has unique abilities and personal goals that influence battlefield encounters. The game emphasizes choice-driven narrative—player decisions determine character relationships, whether new bonds form, friendships sever, or family ties mend.
A demo is available now on Steam for Windows PC. The full game does not yet have a release date.
