Sony is messaging PS5 owners with a blunt offer: “Trade in your PS5 console for up to $400.” The message, dated November 2 and shared by a user on ResetEra, promises a cash payment into your bank account if you trade in through Back Market. Reports so far point to US players.
The $400 is an average for a standard PS5 with two or more controllers
The top figure comes with conditions. According to the message’s fine print, it is “based on the average promised trade-in amount quoted for a PS5 Standard console with two or more controllers in Grade 0 condition,” from orders created between August 23 and September 22, 2026.
Sony adds that “actual amounts may vary depending on the console model, condition, storage capacity, included accessories, and refurbisher inspection.” So one controller, a scuffed shell or a Digital Edition could all change your quote, and the figure can still move after inspection.
Back Market says it quotes in about 2 minutes and pays by direct deposit
Sony isn’t buying these consoles directly. Back Market’s trade-in page says the offer comes from a professional refurbisher in about 2 minutes. You then transfer your data and ship the device free within 21 days, and the page promises a direct deposit within 5 business days. Back Market’s trade-in terms apply to the sale.
Replacing that PS5 now costs $600 to $650
The PS5 launched at $500, so up to $400 back is high for a console this old. It looks different if you plan to buy again: new PS5 models now run $600 to $650, and a PS5 Pro is about $900. Sony’s message doesn’t say why it’s pushing trade-ins now. If your console is idle, get the quote and read the condition terms before you ship anything.
