Square Enix has shown how Final Fantasy VII Revelation handles Midgar, and the answer is downward. A 45-second teaser posted on the official Final Fantasy VII accounts on October 26 follows Cloud on a pink chocobo through the city’s outskirts, over a fissure in the ground and into a vertical network of caverns beneath the plate. The clip carries a Rating Pending ESRB badge and the game’s exploration HUD, with distance markers to a set destination counting down as Cloud descends.
The chocobo flies, and it has a meter
The teaser opens among scaffolding and Shinra banners on the edge of the city before the chocobo takes a running leap into the fissure, spreads its wings and glides. A blue ring under the bird fills and drains as it flies, which players in the thread read as a flight or stamina gauge that limits how long you can stay airborne before gliding down. From the air Cloud drops through a tall shaft of rock, lands in a cavern lit by hanging lamps where a Moogle is waiting, then rides deeper past industrial walkways and a red-lit stairwell as the clip ends.
It is the first time Square Enix has shown Midgar as open space you traverse with a mount. In Remake the city was a sequence of corridors, and in Rebirth you never went back. The clip’s vertical layout, with the camera repeatedly tilting down to show how far there is to fall, is the point: this Midgar has depth as well as sprawl.
Fans are already guessing Deepground
The thread on the Final Fantasy subreddit, where the teaser pulled in more than 150 upvotes within hours, quickly landed on Deepground, the Shinra facility beneath Midgar from Dirge of Cerberus, as the likely destination. That is speculation. Square Enix has not said what is under the city, only that the depths of Midgar are reachable in Revelation. Some players also questioned why the publisher is showing this much six months before release, with others pointing out that Rebirth’s trailers gave away plenty and the game still surprised everyone.
Revelation launches April 8, 2027 on four platforms
Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final part of the Remake trilogy, launches April 8, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, the first entry in the trilogy to ship on every platform at once. Cid and Vincent join the playable cast, the Highwind airship is yours to fly, and director Naoki Hamaguchi has said the game is bigger than Rebirth.
