Brotato’s jungle expansion is a week away. Primal Dread, the next paid DLC for the potato-powered bullet heaven, launches November 2 on Steam for Windows, Mac and Linux, and the team has started teasing the new characters one at a time. First up is the Veteran, revealed on the Brotato subreddit on October 26 with the line that the team decided to “make the reference behind Brotato even more obvious.”
The Veteran is built to fight hordes while low on health
The Veteran is described as “a one-potato army used to being low on health and fighting hordes of enemies. That’s how it thrives!” In Brotato terms that points to a character whose bonuses kick in when your health bar is nearly empty, the opposite of the tank builds most players lean on in late waves. The team says more character teasers will follow over the week, each with its own animated GIF, and that it has stopped arguing about how to pronounce the format.
Evolution is a stat you push left or right
The headline mechanic was shown at the Triple-i Initiative showcase on October 8, when the release date was announced. Evolution is a new stat with two directions: items and choices can push it one way or the other, and each side changes the game in a different way. The Steam page lists the rest of the package as a new map, new characters, new weapons, items and pets, new music tracks from Brotato composer Adonai, and new achievements. The screenshots show a jungle full of dinosaurs, sinkholes that open in the arena floor, and a very large purple dinosaur head that takes up a good chunk of the screen.
Primal Dread was first announced at the Triple-i Initiative in April 2026 and ran a sign-up playtest over the summer. It follows Abyssal Terrors, the 2024 expansion that added the Abyss map and sea creatures.
Steam first, with no date yet for mobile or consoles
The launch is PC only. Brotato is also on mobile, Switch, PlayStation and Xbox, and the first question in the subreddit thread was about the mobile version, which has no date. The DLC’s price has not been listed on Steam yet. The base game is $4.99, and Abyssal Terrors launched at the same price.
