World of Warcraft Forever warns you three minutes before the world refreshes around you

A countdown window with a move-now button, built for Hardcore but in the whole game, will be tested in the beta starting September 17.

Kris Zierhut, principal game designer, described a new warning for world refreshes at the World of Warcraft Hardcore: What’s Next panel at BlizzCon 2026. The feature was made for Hardcore in World of Warcraft Forever, though Zierhut said “you’ll have it in the whole game.”

A world refresh happens when there are “too many or too few players in the area where you are,” and the game has to rebuild the world around you. “When we do that refresh, suddenly creatures respawn,” Zierhut said. He described a Classic Hardcore duo run in Loch Modan on a crowded Saturday morning, when every Trogg spawn around him and a friend came back at once and he had to run down the hill. “We really don’t like the experience that represents,” he said.

In World of Warcraft Forever, a window pops up with a three-minute countdown before the refresh, so you can get somewhere safe. A button lets you skip the wait and say “I’m somewhere safe, this is good, go ahead and move me now.” According to Zierhut, “no more are you going to lose your characters to this sudden change of the world around you.”

The system will be tested in the World of Warcraft Forever beta, which starts Thursday, September 17. The beta will not have the Hardcore rule set, which the panel said is not in the game at launch “but soon.” No date for Hardcore was given.
