Super Monkey Studio and publisher Develup Games have released a free demo of SKULD on Steam. The Norse mythology action tower defense game is available now, and the studio says it lets players fight alongside their turrets rather than watch from above.

In SKULD, you play as Skuld, a Valkyrie and Norn of fate. You place turrets, then hold the gate yourself with fast melee combos while enemies go after both your defenses and you. The game is set after Ragnarök, and the demo covers the early fight against Hela’s corrupted creatures across the Nine Realms.

Blade or base: how the combat is built

According to the publisher, each battle begins with a deck of towers, and players shape Skuld’s abilities before the fight starts. Players can build for the blade, focusing on their own combat, or for the base, building a fortress and letting it do most of the work.

Between battles, Skuld returns to Valhalla, where choices made with Odin, Loki and the other gods decide where the campaign goes next. The art is hand-painted, and an original soundtrack gives each realm its own sound.

SKULD is the studio’s debut title. According to the studio, it was funded at 140% on Kickstarter.
