Grinding Gear Games revealed the Covens of Umbra league mechanic for Path of Exile 3.30 at ExileCon 2026: coven cauldrons in each area hand out Fates, cards you invoke on that area’s boss for extra rewards and a harder fight. It launches November 13 (PST), free to play.
The story follows Mora, a witch trapped by the magic of the Coven Queen, whose homeland of Umbra was plunged into eternal darkness. Slaying the Queen’s covens at their rites lets you pick a Fate from the cauldron. When you reach the area boss, Mora holds it in a storm of umbral energy and you can invoke up to three Fates on it. Each one adds a reward, from currency and gear to uniques and maps, and empowers the boss, in one demo fight with storms of crows.
Some Fates carry combo rewards that need several cards played together. One triple combo grants an exceptional support gem, and a double combo drops the new Dreadmaidens’ Sacrament, a unique Basalt Flask. Invoking two copies of the same Fate combines them and triples the rewards of the first one played, according to the presenter.
Fate-empowered bosses can also drop Viscera, trophies you impale on the Wickerman for permanent buffs. It holds a head, an arm, a body and a leg, and Viscera come in three tiers, the highest only in the endgame. Every campaign and map boss has its own.
At higher Atlas tiers, bosses can drop Grim Fates, one for each pinnacle boss, which make those fights harder and drop Pinnacle Viscera. Beating Grim Fate pinnacles is the only way to reach the Coven Queen. Campaign layouts were also rearranged so you always find area bosses, with over two dozen new bosses added. Full patch notes were not shown.
