GTA 6 needs 225.34 GB on Xbox Series X|S, according to Microsoft’s own store catalog. The listing puts the Grand Theft Auto VI package at 225,336,918,016 bytes, which your Xbox shows as about 209.9 GB because consoles count storage in binary units. On a 512 GB Xbox Series S, with roughly 364 GB free for games out of the box, GTA 6 alone takes more than half of it.
Pre-loading starts November 10, so if you’re on a Series S, this is the week to start deleting things.
209.86 GB and 225.34 GB are the same download
The Xbox figure surfaced on Reddit today as a 209.86 GB pre-load that “expands to 225.34 GB” once installed. That’s a unit mix-up rather than two sizes. 225,336,918,016 bytes is 225.34 GB in the decimal gigabytes store listings use, and 209.86 GB in the binary gigabytes your console’s storage screen uses. Microsoft’s catalog doesn’t list a separate install size.
The number fits under Rockstar’s own figure. Its pre-load FAQ says the download needs “up to 212 GB of available space depending on your device”, which lines up with the binary 209.86 GB. Rockstar hasn’t published separate PS5 and Xbox sizes, and a day-one patch could still add to the total.
The Japanese Xbox listing is slightly smaller, at 224.14 GB (208.74 GB on your console), about 1.2 GB less than the US listing.
A Series S has room for GTA 6 and not much else
The 512 GB Series S leaves about 364 GB for games after the system’s own reserved space, so GTA 6 takes roughly 58 percent of it. A 1 TB Series X has about 802 GB free, so there it’s closer to a quarter.
If you’re short on space:
- Clear at least 212 GB before November 10. Rockstar’s FAQ is the safe target, and leaving a little extra covers a launch patch.
- Older Xbox One games can live on a USB hard drive, but Series X|S games like GTA 6 have to run from the internal SSD or an official expansion card.
- Keep automatic updates on and leave the console on or in Sleep mode, or the pre-load won’t start on its own.
GTA 6 pre-loads November 10 and unlocks at midnight on November 19
Rockstar moved the pre-load up from November 12 to November 10. On Xbox Series X|S it opens globally at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10, which is 7 p.m. ET and 4 p.m. PT on Monday, November 9. On PS5 it opens at midnight local time on November 10, with auto-downloads on and the console on or in Rest Mode.
The game itself unlocks at midnight local time on Thursday, November 19, on both consoles. Boxed copies contain a download code rather than a disc and arrive from November 12, so physical buyers download the same 212 GB.
