Minecraft player recreates Sonic the Hedgehog out of blocks and command blocks, no mods and no resource packs

Ice28_, who built Minecraft inside Minecraft and then Super Mario Bros, runs Green Hill Zone Act 1 start to finish using the original ROM's math.

Sonic the Hedgehog's Green Hill Zone rendered in Minecraft blocks, with the Minecraft hotbar and first-person hand visible

Sonic the Hedgehog’s Green Hill Zone now runs inside Minecraft, built out of blocks and commands with no mods and no resource packs beyond the sound. The player behind it, who posts as Ice28_, is the same person who built a playable Minecraft inside Minecraft earlier this year, a post that reached 4,300 upvotes on r/Minecraft, and then followed it with Super Mario Bros.

The 59-second video shows a full run of Green Hill Zone Act 1 from the start to the “Sonic has passed” results screen, with rings, springs, a Buzz Bomber and the loop, and Minecraft’s hotbar and first-person hand visible the whole time.

The physics copy the original ROM’s math, and a flaw forced a restart from scratch

Ice28_ says the project was almost finished once before “a major flaw” meant starting over. The movement is built by “directly copying the ROM’s calculation method,” the way the 1991 Mega Drive game computes Sonic’s speed and slopes, though they admit Minecraft’s overhead produced “some bizarre situations where the actual results differed.” Everything on screen is Minecraft blocks, which is what the comments found hardest to believe. One reply: “I genuinely do not understand how this is physically possible.”

Minecraft in Minecraft, then Mario, then an RGB display, now Sonic

This is the fourth command-only project in the series. The Minecraft-in-Minecraft build came first, then a playable RGB display, then Super Mario Bros. The Mario post drew enough “fake” accusations that Ice28_ posted a follow-up with the world file and datapack for anyone to download and run, a Korean-language video of the command generation process, and a note that every command in the datapack also works in ordinary command blocks. “This is not fake,” it ends. The Sonic post has had a friendlier reception so far, with the top replies asking how it is possible rather than whether it is.

Sonic the Hedgehog itself is not in Minecraft officially right now beyond the 2021 Sonic DLC for Bedrock Edition. This version is Java, and Ice28_ has not said whether the world file will be shared the way the Mario one was.
