WoW Forever stats explained: hit cap, unified hit and crit, healing gear and HoT crits

World of Warcraft: Forever screenshot

The short answer

Hit and crit
Each is now one stat. A point of hit chance on gear works for melee, ranged, spells, poisons and traps. Crit chance is merged the same way.
Hit cap
Blizzard has not published a Forever hit cap. The Classic combat table is still the base, and raid bosses still sit above you, so caster and melee hit targets work the way they did in Classic.
Healing gear
Every healing item now also adds spell damage, at roughly a third of its healing. Hide of the Wild gives up to 42 healing and 14 damage.
HoTs and DoTs
Yes, they can crit. Rejuvenation, Renew, Wild Growth, Tranquility and Riptide were all fixed in beta to land critical hits, as were Devouring Plague and Hellfire.

Item tooltips for Lionheart Helm, Edgemaster's Handguards and Hide of the Wild showing WoW Forever's hit, crit, dodge and parry reduction and healing plus damage stats
Blizzard’s example cards: Lionheart Helm carries 2% hit and 2% crit as single stats, and Hide of the Wild adds damage alongside its healing.

WoW Forever stats in 30 seconds (TL;DR)

  • Hit chance is unified. One number covers melee, ranged and spells, including poisons, traps and taunts.
  • Crit chance is unified the same way. Rogue, Hunter and caster crit all come from the same stat on gear.
  • Weapon skill stays, but you get less of it per item than in Classic.
  • Expertise is in, as a reduction to the chance your attacks are dodged or parried. Edgemaster’s Handguards give 1.0%.
  • Bonus healing gear now also gives spell damage, so healers can quest.
  • Caster weapons carry spell damage and healing from about level 10.
  • Resilience is not in the game.
  • HoTs and DoTs crit. Several talents that react to crits only count non-periodic ones.

Hit chance is one stat for melee, ranged and spells

In Classic, hit was split three ways: melee hit, ranged hit and spell hit, each on different items. That was a mess for hybrids. Kris Zierhut, Blizzard’s principal game designer for combat, items, classes and talents, named the Enhancement Shaman, the Retribution Paladin and “even a warrior who wants your taunts to land” as the players it hurt.

In Forever, hit and crit are each a single stat. One hit chance number covers every attack you make, poisons and traps included. If your helm says “Improves your chance to hit by 2.0%”, that 2% applies to your Lightning Bolt and your Stormstrike alike.

Hit on gear is still a percentage, not a rating. The Lionheart Helm, a level 56 plate helm, lists +18 Strength, 2.0% hit and 2.0% crit. There is no separate “hit rating” number to convert, which is what most “wow forever hit rating” searches are trying to work out.

Talents still split hit by school

Only the gear stat is unified. Talents can still raise hit for one kind of attack, and the launch notes show several:

  • Precision (Shaman, renamed from Elemental Precision): 2/4/6% chance to hit with all spells.
  • Divine Precision (Paladin): 4/8% chance to hit with Holy spells, plus 10/20% shorter Silence effects on you.
  • Furious Precision (Warrior, Fury): 4/7/10% chance to hit with off-hand attacks.
  • Dual Wield Specialization (Warrior): its hit bonus applies to the off-hand only. A beta bug that gave it to both weapons was fixed.

Dwarves also get 1% hit with spells and attacks from the new Artisan’s Precision racial, added in the October 26 racial rework. Tauren lost the 1% hit they had on Endurance during beta.

Blizzard has not published a hit cap for WoW Forever

No developer post, panel or patch note gives a Forever hit cap number. BlizzCon’s stats talk gave “no conversion numbers for the unified stats”, and the launch notes do not add one. Any exact cap you see quoted for Forever comes from player testing, not Blizzard.

What Blizzard has said is that Forever keeps Classic’s combat feel, and nothing in the notes rewrites the combat table. So the Classic rules are the safe starting point:

  • Targets above your level are harder to hit. Raid bosses count as three levels above you, so you need more hit against them than against same-level mobs.
  • Spells: in Classic, casters needed 16% spell hit against a level 63 raid boss and about 3% against a level 60 target. A 1% miss chance on spells could never be removed.
  • Melee and ranged: weapon skill lowers your miss chance and your glancing blows against higher-level targets, which is why it still exists in Forever.

The big change is what the cap costs you. Because one stat now feeds both, a hybrid only has one target to reach, not two. An Enhancement Shaman gearing for melee hit is gearing for spell hit too.

Is there a crit cap?

Blizzard has not announced one, and no note in beta mentions a cap on crit chance. Talent values were trimmed instead: Mage Critical Mass went back to 3 points for 6% total crit, down from a 5-point, 10% version tested in beta.

Crit chance is also one stat, and PvP crits hit full strength

Critical strike chance on gear is merged the same way as hit. A crit item helps your spells and your weapon attacks equally. A few launch details worth knowing:

  • Crit in PvP is no longer reduced. An October beta build removed the reduced efficacy of critical strikes in PvP.
  • Rage from crits is doubled. Landing a critical strike generates 100% more Rage for Warriors and Druids.
  • Moonkin Aura and Leader of the Pack both increase all types of critical strike again at launch, and they do not stack with each other.
  • Racial crit is small. Humans keep 1% from Ruthless. Orcs lost their 1% crit racial on October 26 and Dwarves lost 2% critical damage and healing from Earth Fury.

HoTs and DoTs can crit in WoW Forever

Yes, periodic effects can land critical hits. The September 24 beta build “corrected an issue” so that Rejuvenation, Renew, Wild Growth, Tranquility and Riptide can crit. The October 1 build did the same for Devouring Plague and Hellfire. Riptide is now a pure heal over time at launch, with no initial heal, so its crits come from the ticks.

Some talents only count direct crits. Blizzard calls these “non-periodic” in the notes:

EffectPeriodic crits?Source
Rejuvenation, Renew, Wild Growth, Tranquility, RiptideCan critSept 24 beta notes
Devouring Plague, HellfireCan critOct 1 beta notes
Vengeance (Paladin)Triggers only from non-periodic critsSept 24 beta notes
Divine Aegis (Priest)Triggers only from non-periodic crit healsOct 15 beta notes
Inner Focus (Priest)Its crit bonus does not apply to periodic effectsOct 1 beta notes
Vampiric Embrace healingCan no longer critNov 2 launch notes

The practical answer for healers: crit is worth having on a Druid or Priest, but it will not drive Divine Aegis or similar procs off your HoTs. Gnome players should also know that Eureka! does not benefit periodic effects at all, and channeled spells do not count as periodic.

Every one of those spells now draws hit and crit from the same two stats as the melee in the group.

Healing gear gives bonus damage at about a third of its healing

In Classic, a healer in full healing gear could barely kill a mob. “You go out questing and you can’t kill anything,” as Zierhut put it. Forever fixes that: every healing item also adds spell damage. The examples Blizzard showed all land close to a 3 to 1 split:

ItemHealingSpell damageOther
Hide of the Wild (level 57 cloak)up to 42up to 14+10 Intellect, +8 Stamina
Staff of Westfallup to 48up to 162% movement speed in Elwynn, Westfall, Redridge and the Deadmines
Whitemane’s Chapeauup to 20up to 7+10 Intellect, +9 Stamina, +12 Spirit, 20% faster resurrection casts
Ladimore Heirloom Ring (quest)up to 5up to 5+6 Intellect

Pure spell damage gear still exists, and hybrid caster items like the Ladimore ring give both equally. Caster weapons now carry spell damage and healing “all the way down to level 10”, so a Priest or Mage should care about weapon upgrades as much as a Warrior does.

The re-itemization pass upgraded every dungeon boss drop to rare quality and added quest rewards so each class gets something, which is where most of this gear comes from while leveling.

Weapon skill stays, and Expertise reduces dodge and parry

Weapon skill was “a little too easy to get and a little too strong” in Classic, Zierhut said. In Forever you can still get it, but less per item. Edgemaster’s Handguards, the famous level 44 mail gloves, now give +1 to Axes, Daggers and Swords plus +1 Weapon Damage. Blizzard has not said what the per-item limit is.

Expertise is new. It reduces the chance your attacks are dodged or parried, and it is aimed at tanks who need their threat attacks to connect. The Handguards carry 1.0%. The October 15 notes confirm the in-game name: “Pets now correctly benefit from Expertise.”

Resilience is not coming. Zierhut said so directly: “we’re not adding resilience.”

Attributes work like Classic, with more talents scaling off Intellect

Forever keeps all five Classic attributes: Strength, Agility, Stamina, Intellect and Spirit. Blizzard said “Classic stats stay”, and nothing in the notes changes what each one does at its core.

  • Strength: attack power for plate and mail melee, and block value for shield users.
  • Agility: attack power for Rogues, Hunters and feral Druids, plus crit, dodge and armor.
  • Stamina: health. Warlock pets now get only 2 Health per point of the Warlock’s Stamina, down from 7.5.
  • Intellect: mana and spell crit. Several talents now turn it into other stats.
  • Spirit: health and mana regeneration out of combat and while not casting. Humans get 10% more of it from Human Spirit.

Talents that convert Intellect

Forever leans on Intellect for hybrids. Launch values from the November 2 notes:

  • Champion of the Light (Paladin): spell damage equal to 12/24/36/48/60% of Intellect.
  • Mental Dexterity (Shaman): attack power equal to 50/100/150% of Intellect.
  • Arcane Resilience (Mage): armor equal to up to 75% of Intellect over 3 points.
  • Arcane Blast (Mage): each stack grants 12% of Intellect as spell damage for 18 seconds.

Racial base stats were also fixed at launch. Tauren Warriors now start with the correct +5 Strength over Human Warriors, up from a buggy +2, and Skyborne base stats got the same fix.

Damage went up across the board two days before launch

Stat values sit on top of class tuning, and that changed late. On November 2 Blizzard dropped Classic power budgets: it “raised damage on classes across the game” and raised the health of higher-level creatures to match. Top-rank Lightning Bolt gained 80%, Shred went from 155% to 200% weapon damage and Starfire base damage rose about 40%.

Blizzard says it will avoid big tuning changes before raids open, and expects a large tuning pass once enough players are leveling past 30. Stat weights for your class will move with that pass, so treat any stat priority list from the beta as provisional.

FAQ

Is spell hit a separate stat in WoW Forever?

No. Gear hit chance is one stat that covers spells, melee and ranged. Talents like Shaman Precision or Paladin Divine Precision can still add hit to spells only.

What is the hit cap in WoW Forever?

Blizzard has not published one. The Classic combat table still applies, so you need more hit against raid bosses, which count as three levels above you, than against same-level mobs. In Classic, casters needed 16% spell hit against a raid boss.

Is there hit rating in WoW Forever?

No. Hit on gear is a flat percentage, as in Classic. There is no rating to convert.

Can HoTs crit in WoW Forever?

Yes. Rejuvenation, Renew, Wild Growth, Tranquility and Riptide were all fixed in beta to land critical heals.

Can DoTs crit in WoW Forever?

Yes. Devouring Plague and Hellfire were fixed in beta to critically strike. Talents such as Vengeance and Divine Aegis only trigger from non-periodic crits.

Why does my healing gear have spell damage?

Every healing item in Forever also gives spell damage, at about a third of its healing value, so healers can kill things while questing.

Is there Resilience in WoW Forever?

No. Blizzard said at BlizzCon it is not adding Resilience.

What does Expertise do in WoW Forever?

It reduces the chance your attacks are dodged or parried. It is aimed at tanks, and pets benefit from it too.
