WoW: Forever’s Shaman players lock an 80,000-member Discord in protest, a day before launch

The moderators say this is about class identity, not damage, and that the server will reopen whatever Blizzard does.

The Shaman Classic Discord, a server with more than 80,000 members, went read-only on Tuesday morning, one day before WoW: Forever launches on November 4. Its moderators call it a protest against how Blizzard has handled all three Shaman specs, and the lockdown covers the entire server, including channels for Classic, Mists of Pandaria and Season of Discovery players.

The moderators say feedback “gets completely ignored”

The lockdown announcement did not hold back:

We are locking down the entire Shaman Classic server, active immediately. The reason for this drastic measure, is how the developers are approaching all shaman specs in WoW Forever. Community Feedback gets completely ignored and Class Fantasies are getting destroyed.

It ends with a demand: “Give us back our class and spec identities, and fantasies!”

“This is not about damage output,” the server says

A follow-up post later in the morning tried to head off the obvious reply. The moderators say the lockdown is “not an attempt at blackmail or coercion,” but an attempt to be heard “after weeks of sending feedback through other legitimate channels to no avail.” They add that “the server will re-open regardless of the outcome,” without giving a date.

Their case is about “fundamental design intent and overall class feel,” not raw numbers. They even offer to accept lower damage in exchange: “hybrid tax us all you want if the result is a cohesive class with strong class fantasy elements.”

Windfury, Lava Burst and Riptide top the complaint list

The follow-up breaks the complaints down by spec:

  • Enhancement: Windfury Weapon “will not be our primary imbue for raiding,” and Spell Power and Intellect gear appears to outperform physical or hybrid gear.
  • Elemental: Blizzard chose Chain Lightning over Lava Burst, which the moderators say leaves the spec with no second damage school against nature-immune enemies and “a 2 button rotation.” They also object to mana problems and to moving Improved Ghost Wolf, which they see as aimed at Elemental in PvP.
  • Restoration: Riptide loses its upfront healing, which they say turns it into “a sad copy of Renew or Rejuvenation.”

They also argue that hybrid Enhancement now overlaps so heavily with Elemental that tuning one spec without affecting the other is close to impossible.

Top-rank Lightning Bolt gained 80 percent Monday, and that didn’t settle it

The timing follows Monday’s final beta notes, which removed Lava Burst, raised top-rank Lightning Bolt damage by 80 percent and lifted Stormstrike to 150 percent normalized weapon damage. Those are real buffs, which is why the moderators are stressing identity over output. Blizzard said in the same notes that it does not plan “big tuning changes” before raids open next month, apart from bugs and serious outliers. We didn’t find a response to the lockdown on Blizzard’s forums when this was published.

Reddit answered with a fake spell called Burst of Tears

Much of the community is not on the moderators’ side. A widely shared reaction on r/classicwow is a joke tooltip with more than 1,600 upvotes, replacing Lava Burst with “Burst of Tears,” a 1-day cast that reads “You close the Community Discord.” Another player, responding to the follow-up, asked why pairing Flametongue Weapon with a Windfury Totem buff doesn’t count as class fantasy.

Until the server reopens, Shaman players who only want rotation or gearing advice can’t post there, including those playing the other Classic versions the protest isn’t about.
