What this guide helps you do
Phantom Blade Zero launched on October 29, 2026 on PS5 and PC (Steam and Epic), and its bow raises questions early. Bow icons show up on the map long before you can use them, and the quest item you find is broken. This guide covers who gives the bow, how to reach the camp, what “repair the bow” actually means, how to avoid missing it, how to upgrade it, and the second bow that shows up later.
It is written for the launch version with the day-one patch. A couple of details differ between early reports, such as which archer drops the Broken-String Bow. We say where that is the case. For the rest of your first hours, see the beginner guide to parrying, saving and the boss order.
The Feather Bow is a Phantom Edge, not a main weapon
Your loadout holds two primary weapons and two Phantom Edges. Phantom Edges are secondary tools in their own slots, used with a charge resource called Remnant Sparks that refills at Bells. The Feather Bow sits in one of those Phantom Edge slots, so you keep both your main weapons when you equip it.
Like several Phantom Edges, it is also an exploration key. The Dread Axe breaks giant chains, the Tiger Cannon breaks weakened stone walls, and the Feather Bow shoots the targets marked with bow icons on the map. If you have been seeing those icons and wondering why nothing happens, this is the item you are missing.
Purge the Sect starts on a roof at the Outpost
The Brooding Old Archer sits on the roof of a small house at the Outpost in Weeping Creek Valley. Take the path opposite the Blacksmith. He is close to the first bow prompt you see, which is the easiest way to spot him. Talk to him and the Tale Purge the Sect starts.
The area he sends you to is fogged until you progress the main story and beat Peng Meng, the Axemaster. Peng Meng also drops the Dread Axe, a Phantom Edge that breaks chains. One player reports getting the bow later, after beating Hua, but Peng Meng is the gate most reports name.
One player who missed the quest said the archer on the roof “just won’t wake up”. If he does not respond, check that you have beaten Peng Meng, then try talking to him again.
The Ruthless Archer Camp is west of the Valley Sha-Chi Tower
Once Peng Meng is down, head to the Bell at the base of the Sha-Chi Tower. From there:
- Ignore the locked door on your right.
- Take the top path.
- Climb the wooden ladders on the left up to the high bridge.
The bridge and the buildings around it are the Ruthless Archer Camp, west of the Valley Sha-Chi Tower.
The Broken-String Bow is a key item from one of the camp’s archers. Reports differ on exactly which one. Two guides say it is the archer next to the golden chest on the bridge. Another says it drops from the final archer you kill. A third places it on a dying archer inside the house at the top. In practice, clear the whole camp, including the house, and you will have it.
One report says the golden chest next to that archer holds an accessory that boosts your combat stats. Its name has not been published, so open it and check.
Repairing the bow means handing it back to the Brooding Old Archer
“How to repair the bow” is a common question, and the answer is simpler than it sounds. There is no blacksmith step and no material cost. You give the broken bow to the old man and he fixes it.
- Activate the Ruthless Archer Camp Bell, on the stairs next to the bridge. This also saves your progress.
- Fast travel to the Outpost Bell.
- Talk to the Brooding Old Archer on his roof and hand over the Broken-String Bow.
- He repairs it and gives you the Feather Bow.
If you killed the camp’s archers before you ever spoke to him, one guide says you just talk to him twice and he hands over the bow.
The bow is missable if you push too far into Crimson Forest
Several guides and players agree the bow can be missed. The exact cutoff is less clear. One guide says the quest fails if you beat the main boss of Crimson Forest before you hand in the bow, and calls it the only Phantom Edge you can permanently miss. Another only calls it slightly missable. Neither is confirmed by the developer.
The safe rule: hand the Broken-String Bow in as soon as you have it, before you head deep into Crimson Forest. It is also worth knowing that moving into a new region can fail unfinished white side quests from earlier regions, so the Valley is a good place to tidy up before you leave.
Use it with R2 on bags, targets and enemies
On PS5, press R2 near bow prompts or the bow icons on the map. The PC keyboard key is not confirmed yet; check your key bindings for the Phantom Edge input. Some PC players report a bug where the Phantom Edge on Left Ctrl keeps firing after they remap it.
- Hanging bags and packages: shoot them down for Remnant Dust and crafting materials.
- Red interactables: hit them to open the way.
- Enemies: snipe them before you engage.
A few bow targets near the Sha-Chi Tower cannot be hit from outside. Players say you reach them later from inside the tower, through a red door. Some players also report a bow prompt that did not appear until they restarted the game, which looks like a bug.
No bow-specific arrow count has been reported. The bow uses the same Remnant Spark charges as your other Phantom Edges.
The Reinforced Bowstring unlocks Precision Shot
One guide reports that a Soul Tempering material called the Reinforced Bowstring upgrades the Feather Bow and unlocks Precision Shot. Hold R2 to charge and release on time for more damage and more Sha-Chi depletion. The upgrade costs 5,000 Remnant Dust.
The same guide puts the Bowstring in a chest in the Black Serpent House in Village of Lu. Brambles block the entrance, and you burn them with the Flaming Mane, a Phantom Edge from Flame, the Lion Dance Grandmaster in Pangzhen. So this is a mid-game return trip, not something you can do straight away.
The same room reportedly holds the Black Serpent Fang and a Serpent Venom Sac: Black. Take the Fang, but do not use it yet. It is one of the three parts for the Serpent Door, the point of no return covered in the true ending guide. This route comes from one source, so check it in game.
The One-Eyed Bow is a second bow from Meigu Lake
The Feather Bow is not the only one. The One-Eyed Bow drops from the One-Eyed Archer, fought at the One-Eyed Isle Dock in Meigu Lake. Boss lists disagree on whether he is a main or optional boss, so do not assume the story will take you to him.
Both bows sit in the Ranged group of Phantom Edges, alongside the Flying Dagger, Goldblaze and Loong Trident. For where every Phantom Edge comes from, see the weapons and Phantom Edges guide.
Step-by-step: getting the Feather Bow

It sits beside the archer on the bridge.

The Ruthless Archer Camp Bell is on the stairs next to the bridge.
Hand the bow back
Fast travel to the Outpost Bell and give the Broken-String Bow to the Brooding Old Archer. He gives you the Feather Bow.

Then go back to the bow icons on your map and shoot them with R2.
Troubleshooting and common mistakes
- Mistake: Looking for a blacksmith to repair the bow. Fix: Hand the Broken-String Bow to the Brooding Old Archer at the Outpost. He repairs it for free.
- Mistake: Trying to reach the camp before Peng Meng. Fix: The area is fogged until you beat him. Follow the main story first.
- Mistake: Leaving the camp without the Broken-String Bow. Fix: Reports differ on which archer drops it. Clear the whole camp, including the house at the top.
- Mistake: Holding the bow until later. Fix: The quest can fail if you go too far into Crimson Forest. Hand it in straight away.
- Mistake: Equipping it in a primary weapon slot. Fix: It is a Phantom Edge. It goes in one of the two Phantom Edge slots.
- Mistake: Assuming a bow target is broken. Fix: Some are reached from inside the Sha-Chi Tower later. If a prompt is missing where it should be, players say a restart fixed it.
