The short answer
- How to parry
- Tap L1 as the hit lands. Holding L1 is a normal block that drains your Sha-Chi with every hit. A perfect parry costs no Sha-Chi and gives a crisp spark and sound.
- How to save
- There is no save button. The game saves at Bells, which are also where you upgrade, shop, learn skills and fast travel.
- Best difficulty
- Pick the one you enjoy. Difficulty does not change rewards, and every trophy can be earned on Wayfarer, Pathbreaker or Hellwalker.
- The early walls
- “The bridge” is usually Hua Qianxiao, the Sword Fanatic, fought on a bridge at the start of Crimson Forest. “The Outlaw” is Jing Ye, a mounted boss later in the same region.

30-second quick start (TL;DR)
- Parry: tap L1 on the hit. Hold L1 after parrying the first hit of a string to catch the rest.
- Red flash: dodge it. It cannot be parried.
- Sha-Chi: your guard meter. Each primary weapon has its own bar, so swap weapons when one runs low.
- Saving: rest at Bells. There is no manual save.
- Bosses: die in phase two and you restart from phase two.
- Difficulty: same rewards on every mode. Choose freely.
What this guide helps you do
Phantom Blade Zero launched on October 29, 2026 on PS5 and PC (Steam and Epic). It is a fast action game with more than 50 bosses, and the first few hours throw a lot at you. This guide covers the controls, how parrying and Sha-Chi work, how saving works, which difficulty to pick, the two early bosses most players hit a wall on, and the boss order for the whole game.
It is written for the launch version with the day-one patch. A few things are not settled yet, including the dodge button and PC keyboard defaults, and we say so where it matters.
Block and parry are on L1, Phantom Edges on R2
These are the PS5 inputs from one full control list. L1 for block, R1 for dodge and R2 for Phantom Edges are backed up by several players. PC keyboard defaults are not confirmed yet.
| Action | PS5 button |
|---|---|
| Block / parry | L1 (hold to block, tap to parry) |
| Dodge | R1 in most lists; one list says Circle |
| Light / heavy attack | Square / Triangle |
| Jump / interact | Cross / Circle |
| Power Surge | L2 |
| Phantom Edge | R2 |
| Special skills | L1 + Triangle, L1 + Square |
| Lock on | R3 |
| Swap weapon / Phantom Edge | D-pad left / D-pad right |
| Medicine | D-pad up and down |
| Mind’s Eye | Swipe up on the touch pad |
The dodge button is disputed. Most sources, including the newer post-launch list, put dodge on R1 and interact on Circle. One older list says Circle dodges and R1 is Ghoststep. Try both in the tutorial and check your controls menu. On PC, several players report a bug where a Phantom Edge bound to Left Ctrl keeps firing after they remap it.
Tap L1 to parry, hold L1 to block
This is the most important skill in the game. Tap L1 as the attack lands to parry. Get it right and you hear a crisp sound, see a spark, and lose no Sha-Chi. Hold L1 and you block instead, which is safer but drains Sha-Chi with every hit.
Against a combo, parry the first hit, then hold block to parry the rest of that string. The opening tutorial makes you do this, and there is a recap in the menus if you need it later.
Watch the flash colour before an enemy attack:
- Red flash: dodge only. It cannot be parried.
- Blue flash: can be countered with the right input. Players are still working out the exact inputs.
- Grey or black: can be blocked or parried, but it empties your Sha-Chi at once.
Some unblockable hits are not colour-coded at all, so a boss’s first few attempts are for learning. If you want more room, one accessory players name, the Reflex Device +2, widens the parry and perfect dodge windows by 25%.
Sha-Chi is your guard and stamina in one meter
Sha-Chi replaces a stamina bar. Blocking drains it. Run out and you are Guard-Broken, which leaves you open. Enemies have Sha-Chi too, and breaking theirs opens them to big damage.
Each primary weapon has its own Sha-Chi bar. When yours runs low, swap weapons with d-pad left and you have a full bar. Players break a guard with one weapon, then swap and burst with the other. Sha-Chi Essence powers your Power Surge and weapon arts. For which weapons suit this, see the weapons guide.
Bosses have phase checkpoints. Die in phase two and you restart from phase two, not the start of the fight.
The game saves at Bells, with no manual save
There is no save button. Phantom Blade Zero saves when you use a Bell. Bells are also where you upgrade weapons and medicine, shop, learn skills and fast travel. To fast travel, open the map, press Triangle, pick a region, then pick a Bell. A consumable Talisman takes you back to a Bell from anywhere.
One player reports that Settings > System > Load Game keeps several timestamped saves you can go back to. That is worth knowing before the late point of no return in the true ending guide. A few players also report crashes, and at least two report corrupted or lost saves, so rest at Bells often.
The 66 Days mode is different: it has its own save file, autosaves only at Bells and does not let you reload.
Every difficulty gives the same rewards
| Mode | What it does |
|---|---|
| Wayfarer | Story-focused. Enemies are less aggressive and use simpler patterns. |
| Pathbreaker | The standard mode. |
| Hellwalker | Adaptive enemies that react to spacing, feint, and counter moves you repeat. One report says the parry window is two frames shorter. |
| 66 Days | Hellwalker enemies with a day counter. Deaths take days away, and at zero the save is erased. Unlocks after one clear. |
Difficulty does not change rewards. All achievements and the platinum can be earned on any of the first three modes, even all on Wayfarer, and Hellwalker gives no extra loot. 66 Days is not needed for the platinum. So the best difficulty is the one you enjoy.
You can switch difficulty from the pause menu. Some players report that dropping to Wayfarer may lock the save there, but the developer has not confirmed this. Players also say bosses get much easier from the middle of Pangzhen, once accessory upgrades open.
The bridge is a boss fight against Hua Qianxiao
When players say they cannot cross the bridge, they usually mean Hua Qianxiao, the Sword Fanatic, the opening boss of Crimson Forest, fought on a bridge near the Pangzhen Bridge Overlook. He is a drunken sword boss. He lies down to drink from a wine jar, guarding harder while he does, then sends his sword flying at you. One count suggests only about a quarter of players on Steam had beaten him early on. Win and the bridge collapses behind you. The Simmering Brew medicine is right there, and he drops The Fanatic’s Broken Blade.
The second bridge question is the broken bridge by the Creek Valley Plains Entrance Bell in Weeping Creek Valley, with a house and a chest across the gap. Players say the intended route is the path up past the Loong statue, and that a Tiger Cannon wall near the first Long Pillar also leads there later. Some players jump the gap with sprint, jump and an air attack, but it is unreliable.
A third bridge sits in Village of Lu, where an elite enemy unravels the bridge threads.
Jing Ye, the Outlaw, is a mounted boss in Crimson Forest
Jing Ye, the Outlaw is not the first boss. He is a mounted boss in the red-leaf forest of Crimson Forest, the second region, near the Outlaw Trap Bell. Some players took 20 or more tries on Pathbreaker. He drops the Outlaw Warblade, the most used early weapon. The phase tips below come from one guide, so treat them as a starting point.
- Prep: grab the Shieldbreaker Talisman from a chest on the road before the bridge at the start of the region.
- Phase 1 (mounted): parry his strikes and perfect dodge the horse’s leap and air charge, then counter. Do not attack during the red knife volley, which causes Bleed. Dodge sideways. Hit hard once the horse kneels.
- Phase 2 (on foot): he has a shield. Use a guard-breaking weapon. The Dread Axe works: three hits, then a Phantom Edge combo. Do not whiff attacks.
- Phase 3: watch for lunges, a sand throw that blinds you, and a backward swing that fires a projectile you can parry.

- Mistake: Looking for a save option. Fix: There is none. Rest at a Bell.
- Mistake: Leaving side quests unfinished before a new region. Fix: Moving on can fail white side quests from earlier regions.
