WoW Forever racials: every race’s abilities after the October 26 rework

World of Warcraft: Forever screenshot

The short answer

The rule
Every race has two active and two passive racials. The October 26 rework set the launch values: Orcs got Command back, Dwarves got 1% hit, Tauren run up to 60% faster.
Touch of the Grave
Undead passive: spells and attacks have a 5% chance to drain health, up to 5% of your max health, with a 15 second internal cooldown.
Weapon specs
Human Sword and Orc Axe Specialization are gone for good. Blizzard did not want raid loot judged by “required” weapon types.
Skyborne
Both factions share Walk on Air, 2% haste and 5% damage to Elementals. Horde get Skysight, Alliance get Read Leyline.

The first two new passives Blizzard showed. Both survived to launch, and Touch of the Grave now has a 15 second cooldown.

WoW Forever racials in 30 seconds (TL;DR)

  • Kit size: two actives and two passives per race, built as a mix of utility, throughput and survivability.
  • Undead: Touch of the Grave is the standout passive. 5% chance on spells and attacks to drain up to 5% of your max health.
  • Orc: Command is back (Warlock and Hunter pets deal 5% more), Blood Fury is on a 2 minute cooldown.
  • Dwarf: Artisan’s Precision gives 1% hit with spells and attacks. Mace Specialization is gone.
  • Tauren: Plainsrunning builds to 60% run speed on foot, but no longer helps on a mount. Endurance is just 5% health.
  • Human: Ruthless is 1% crit, Human Spirit is 10% Spirit.
  • Troll: Berserking lasts 15 seconds.
  • Skyborne: haste cut to 2%. Read Leyline and Skysight are stronger if you use them at a Ley Line or an elemental convergence.

Each race gets two actives and two passives, tuned for identity

Kris Zierhut, Blizzard’s principal game designer for combat and classes, said at BlizzCon that racials are “stronger and more different than they ever were before”, to give players a reason to roll a new character. Several races also get a damage bonus against one creature type, so “there’s a reason to bring everybody”.

The racials changed a lot during beta. The October 15 build replaced the weapon specializations with flat crit. Players called the new passives too generic, so on October 26 Blizzard rolled several back, saying it had “prioritized racial identity, which means that some races will naturally be slightly more effective than others at certain combat roles.”

The one rollback that did not happen is weapon specialization. Blizzard said it is “not healthy in the long run for future raid and dungeon loot tables to be evaluated through the lens of ‘required’ weapon types.” Humans keep Ruthless in place of Sword Specialization.

How to read the tables: values in bold are from Blizzard’s BlizzCon panel, its Skyborne race page or its development notes up to launch. Values marked “players report” come from the race list beta testers posted on the official forums in early October, with Blizzard’s later changes applied on top.

Alliance racials: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome and High Order Skyborne

RaceActive abilitiesPassive abilities
HumanWill to Survive: removes stuns (players report a 3 minute cooldown). Perception: detect stealth for 20 seconds (players report).Ruthless: 1% critical strike chance. Human Spirit: 10% more Spirit.
DwarfStoneform: removes and grants immunity to Bleed, Poison and Disease, 10% less Physical damage taken for 8 seconds, 3 minute cooldown. Find Treasure: treasure on the minimap, runs alongside other tracking, chance of extra items in most chests.Big Game Hunter: 5% more damage to Beasts. Artisan’s Precision: 1% hit chance with spells and attacks.
Night ElfElune’s Light: players report 10% crit for 15 seconds on a 3 minute cooldown. Shadowmeld: stealth while standing still (players report).Quickness: players report 1% dodge and 2% run speed; the speed now stacks with other speed increases. Wisp Spirit: players report 75% faster as a ghost.
GnomeEscape Artist: players report 3 seconds of immunity to roots and snares, 2 minute cooldown. Eureka!: an 8 second buff, 10% cheaper Mana, Rage or Energy abilities plus a damage and healing bonus (players report 10%); also works on Power Word: Shield, never on periodic effects.Expansive Mind: players report 5% more maximum Mana, Rage or Energy. Engineering Specialization: players report 20% fewer Engineering backfires.
Skyborne (High Order)Walk on Air: glide downward for 10 seconds, 90 second cooldown. Read Leyline: 50% more Health and Mana regeneration for 15 seconds, 100% while Attuned.Wind Blessed: 2% melee, ranged and spell haste. Elemental Insight: 5% more damage to Elementals.

Dwarf hit: Artisan’s Precision replaced Mace Specialization

At BlizzCon the Dwarf kit had Mace Specialization, 1% crit with a mace equipped. October 15 swapped it for Earth Fury, 2% critical damage and healing. October 26 removed Earth Fury and added Artisan’s Precision: “Increases hit chance with spells and attacks by 1%.” Since hit is one stat in Forever, that 1% works for a Dwarf Hunter, Priest and Shaman alike. One Dwarf Shaman on the patch thread answered it with “thank you devs.”

Human: crit down, Spirit up

Ruthless dropped from 2% to 1% crit on October 26, and Human Spirit doubled from 5% to 10% Spirit. Humans are now tilted toward healers and regen rather than raw crit.

Horde racials: Orc, Undead, Tauren, Troll and Windshaper Skyborne

RaceActive abilitiesPassive abilities
OrcBlood Fury: players report 10% attack power and spell power for 15 seconds; 2 minute cooldown. Shatter Curse: dispels Curses and Banes and reduces Magic damage taken by 5%.Command: Warlock and Hunter pets deal 5% more damage. Hardiness: players report 20% shorter stuns.
UndeadWill of the Forsaken: removes Charm, Fear and Sleep, 2 minute cooldown. Cannibalize: 7% of Health and Mana every 2 seconds for 10 seconds from a Humanoid or Undead corpse, 2 minute cooldown.Touch of the Grave: 5% chance to drain up to 5% of max Health, 15 second internal cooldown. Underwater Breathing: 300% longer breath.
TaurenWar Stomp: area stun (players report 2 seconds), 90 second cooldown. Cultivation: grow herbs without Herbalism, 15 minute cooldown, player level needed is the herb’s skill requirement divided by 5.Plainsrunning: 2% run speed per stack up to 60%, on foot only. Endurance: 5% more Health.

Skyborne (Windshaper)Walk on Air: glide downward for 10 seconds, 90 second cooldown. Skysight: 15% run speed for 15 seconds, 30% while Charged.Wind Blessed: 2% melee, ranged and spell haste. Elemental Insight: 5% more damage to Elementals.

Orc Command is back, Axe Specialization is not

The October 15 build replaced Axe Specialization with Savage, a flat 1% crit, and raised Blood Fury to a 3 minute cooldown. October 26 removed Savage, re-added Command for 5% pet damage, and put Blood Fury back to 2 minutes. Orc Warlocks and Hunters are the winners. Orc Warriors lost their axe bonus and got nothing in its place on the passive side.

Shatter Curse was also cut in beta. It used to grant immunity to Curses and Banes with 15% less Magic damage taken; it now dispels them and reduces Magic damage by 5%.

Tauren run at mount speed

Plainsrunning now gives 2% movement speed per stack, up from 1%, with the cap doubled from 30% to 60%, the speed of a level 40 ground mount. You have to keep moving: stutter-stepping no longer holds the stacks. The trade is that it does nothing on a mount, and Endurance lost the hit and critical damage it picked up in beta, leaving only 5% Health.

Touch of the Grave drains up to 5% of your health every 15 seconds at most

Touch of the Grave was the first new racial Blizzard showed, and Zierhut called it “the big one”. The tooltip reads: “Your spells and attacks have a 5% chance to drain Health from the target, up to 5% of your maximum Health.” It gives Undead “the increased damage and survival that they never had before”.

How it behaves at launch, from the beta notes:

  • Internal cooldown: 15 seconds, down from 25 on October 26.
  • Needs a damage component. Spells and abilities that deal no damage cannot trigger it. Distract, Pick Pocket and Polymorph will not set it off.
  • Direct hits only. Shadow Word: Pain triggers it on cast, but not on its periodic ticks.
  • It will not break crowd control or pull Rogues and Druids out of stealth.
  • The November 2 notes also fixed it “not activating frequently enough”, so it procs more reliably than it did in beta.

Because the proc is capped by your own maximum health, it scales with Stamina, and the 15 second cooldown means fast-attacking classes do not get much more out of it than casters do.

Will of the Forsaken no longer gives immunity

Will of the Forsaken still removes Charm, Fear and Sleep instantly, but no longer makes you immune afterwards. Zierhut called the old immunity “a little bit too strong”. It also cannot be used while under Scatter Shot.

Windshapers join the Horde and get Skysight. The High Order join the Alliance and get Read Leyline.

Skyborne racials: Walk on Air, 2% haste, and Leyline or Skysight

The Skyborne pick a faction at character creation, and their kit follows that choice. Blizzard’s race page lists Walk on Air, Wind Blessed and Elemental Insight for both, with one active that differs.

  • Walk on Air (both): glide downward through the air for 10 seconds. Cooldown cut to 90 seconds from 2 minutes in beta.
  • Wind Blessed (both, passive): started at 1% haste on Blizzard’s race page, went to 3% on October 15, and settled at 2% on October 26.
  • Elemental Insight (both, passive): 5% more damage to Elementals.
  • Read Leyline (High Order): 50% more Health and Mana regeneration for 15 seconds. Use it at an actual Ley Line to gain Attuned for 1 hour, which raises it to 100%. It cannot be used while Innervate is active.
  • Skysight (Windshaper): 15% run speed for 15 seconds. Use it at an elemental convergence to gain Charged for 1 hour, which raises it to 30%.

Attuned and Charged both persist through death and are removed when you enter a raid. Both actives can be cast while moving, and Blizzard added more Ley Line and convergence spawns across most Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor zones. The Windshaper and High Order split also decides class access: only Windshapers can be Shaman and only the High Order can be Mage.

Which racials matter most for your class at launch

Blizzard says racials now make some races slightly better at certain roles, by design. Based on the launch values:

  • Warlocks and Hunters: Orc Command is a flat 5% on pet damage, plus Blood Fury.
  • Anyone who cares about hit: Dwarf Artisan’s Precision, 1% hit for every class, with Big Game Hunter on Beasts.
  • Healers: Human Spirit at 10% for regen, or Undead Cannibalize, which now returns mana too. Zierhut called that “particularly fantastic for those paladins”.
  • Solo leveling: Tauren Plainsrunning before your mount, and Undead Touch of the Grave for free healing.
  • PvP: Human Will to Survive and Undead Will of the Forsaken for crowd control, Gnome Escape Artist against roots and snares.

Racials also gate some class choices. The six new race and class combinations announced at BlizzCon are Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin.

FAQ

What does Touch of the Grave do in WoW Forever?

It is the Undead passive. Your spells and attacks have a 5% chance to drain health from the target, up to 5% of your maximum health, with a 15 second internal cooldown. Only abilities with a damage component can trigger it.

Do Orcs have Command in WoW Forever?

Yes. Command was removed during beta and re-added on October 26. It increases Warlock and Hunter pet damage by 5%.

Do Dwarves get hit chance?

Yes. Artisan’s Precision, added on October 26, increases hit chance with spells and attacks by 1%. It replaced Earth Fury, which had replaced Mace Specialization.

How fast can Tauren run?

Plainsrunning stacks 2% movement speed at a time up to 60%, the speed of a level 40 ground mount. It only works on foot, and you have to keep moving to hold it.

Are weapon specializations in WoW Forever?

No. Human Sword Specialization and Orc Axe Specialization were removed in beta and Blizzard chose not to bring them back, so loot is not judged by required weapon types.

What are the Skyborne racials?

Walk on Air, Wind Blessed (2% haste) and Elemental Insight (5% damage to Elementals) for both factions, plus Read Leyline for the Alliance High Order or Skysight for the Horde Windshapers.

How many racials does each race get?

Four: two actives and two passives.
