Every class keeps three trees and seven rows, with one-point talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31
Forever did not replace the 2006 talent layout. “All classes still have three talent trees, they still have seven rows, they still have those one point talents at 11, 21, 31, the gold medal talents, we called them,” principal game designer Kris Zierhut said at the BlizzCon Deep Dive panel. “We’ve even added a fourth gold medal talent at the 16 mark at every single one of the talent trees.”
In practice that gives each tree a new reward in the middle. In Classic you spent points 12 to 20 on incremental passives before the 21-point talent. Now there is a defining talent at 16, so a hybrid build that stops at 16 or 21 points still picks up something you notice.
Blizzard’s class deep dives confirm the rest of the system:
- Talents start at level 10.
- Talents, including your account-wide Legacy talents, are changed at a class trainer in a major city.
- Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40.
The BlizzCon talent window had a Primary tab and a locked Secondary tab. Blizzard did not explain them on stage, and the deep dives later confirmed dual spec at level 40.
Buff-only talents moved to baseline so every one of the 27 trees can earn a group spot
Many talents are “exactly the same as they were, unchanged from 2006,” Zierhut said. Others were updated or replaced. The cuts are talents that only improved a group buff: “Improved Battle Shout, Divine Spirit, Blessing of Kings, Improved Mark of the Wild. They’re all gone. All of those bonuses are now baseline to the class.” That, he said, “makes room for more cool new stuff.”
The target is that you can bring any spec, and no spec is worth stacking. “Every class, every spec is worthy to come, but no class is so strong, or spec is so strong, that you wanna stack them,” Zierhut said, adding that the specs still have “different distinct strengths and weaknesses.”
Lead software engineer Nora Mills described the same goal at the What’s Next panel: “We want to cover gaps where they exist, but we don’t want to erase what makes each class unique.” The team dropped talents that only give small incremental gains. “We’ve instead tried to give you talents that you notice,” she said.
The rework also merged clutter. Warriors’ Axe, Mace, Sword and Polearm Specialization became one talent, Weaponmaster. Rogues’ Dagger, Mace, Sword and Fist Weapon Specialization became Hack and Slash. Hunters’ Monster Slaying and Humanoid Slaying became Improved Tracking.
The 16-point talents Blizzard has named, class by class
From Blizzard’s class deep dives (late September to mid October). The right column says whether the November 2 beta notes changed it. Trees with no 16-point talent named by Blizzard are left out.
| Class and tree | 16-point talent | Launch status |
|---|---|---|
| Paladin, Protection | Swift Judgement: a second Judgement on a 1 minute cooldown | Changed: now unleashes your seal and does not share Judgement’s cooldown |
| Paladin, Holy | Divine Favor, moved down from 21 | Moved to row 3; the new Oath of Light sits in row 4 |
| Paladin, Retribution | Sacred Arbiter: Holy Strike damage up 20 percent, refreshes every Judgement on the target | No change listed |
| Warrior, Arms | Spearing Strike: 15 Rage, 20 second cooldown, dismounts, double damage to mounted targets, Dragons and Giants | No change listed |

| Warrior, Protection | Vanguard: Charge in Defensive Stance | No change listed |
| Priest, Discipline | Soul Warding: cheaper, shorter cooldown Power Word: Shield | No change listed |
| Priest, Holy | Binding Heal | Removed; Holy Binding takes the slot (Flash Heal on others heals you for 50 percent) |
| Priest, Shadow | Vampiric Embrace: 30 seconds, 1 minute cooldown | Its healing can no longer crit |
| Druid, Balance | Insect Swarm, moved in from Restoration | No change listed |
| Druid, Feral | Shifting Power (cat) or Primal Bite (bear) | Replaced in row 4 by Lacerate and Predatory Discipline; both moved to row 7 as 31-point choices |
| Druid, Restoration | Swiftmend, no longer consumes your heal over time | Now needs your own Rejuvenation or Regrowth on the target |
| Hunter, Beast Mastery | Summon Hawk: up to 2 Hawks for 18 seconds | No change listed |

Where a talent moved rows in the final notes, Blizzard did not say what now fills its old 16-point slot, so we have not guessed. Open your talent window and hover the fourth row.

Versus Classic: big talents moved earlier, and new 31-point capstones arrived
The clearest pattern is that iconic talents now come sooner, so leveling and hybrid builds get them:
- Holy Shock moved from 31 points to 21, and its cooldown fell from 30 to 10 seconds.
- Repentance moved from 31 to 21 for Retribution Paladins.
- Mana Tide Totem moved from 31 to 16 for Restoration Shamans.
- Cold Blood moved from 21 to 16 for Assassination Rogues.
- Divine Favor moved from 21 to 16 in the deep dive, then up again to row 3 at launch.
Those moves freed the bottom of the trees for new capstones. Blizzard has named these 31-point talents: Light’s Vigil (Holy Paladin, a party heal off a Holy Shock reset), Prayer of Mending (Holy Priest, up to 5 heals bouncing within 20 yards), Wild Growth (Restoration Druid), Riptide (Restoration Shaman), Sniper Shot (Marksmanship Hunter, a 4 second cast with 45 yards base range), Lacerating Strikes (Survival Hunter), Wrack and Incinerate (Affliction and Destruction Warlock), and Demonic Pact (Demonology Warlock). Feral Druids now get a choice of two 31-point talents, Primal Bite for bears and Shifting Power for cats.
Some talents borrow spells from later expansions, such as Penance at 21 points in Discipline and Mutilate in Assassination. Ice Lance is a Frost talent at 11 points and Arcane Blast an Arcane talent at 11.
The November 2 beta notes removed Twist of Light, Lava Burst and Berserk two days before launch
Two days before launch Blizzard posted its final beta development notes and stopped holding classes to Classic power budgets. The team said some earlier changes were “likely hasty in turning to Burning Crusade- or Wrath-era solutions.” Several of those talents went, which is why builds written in September and October are now wrong. Our report on the notes covers the ability changes; these are the talent tree highlights.
Paladin
Twist of Light is removed; Unsealed Wrath is the new Retribution 31-point talent, storing up to 3 copies of your seal for 15 seconds. Improved Seal of Fury, Voice of Truth, Instrument of Law and One-Handed Weapon Specialization are removed. Light’s Vigil now only targets allies. New talents: Oath of Light, Boundless Light, Stoicism, Turn Evil and Shieldsworn. Our BlizzCon Paladin talent report shows the earlier versions.
Shaman
Lava Burst is removed and replaced by Call of Thunder at 5 percent crit. Lightning Overload’s chance to duplicate a spell rises to 10/20/30 percent from 3/7/10, Elemental Mastery is renamed Lightning Mastery, Maelstrom Weapon’s trigger chance doubles, and Improved Ghost Wolf moves from row 2 to row 4. Shaman players protested the direction; see our report on the Discord lockdown.
Druid
Berserk is removed. Lacerate becomes a Feral talent instead of a baseline spell, Heart of the Wild and Furor swap trees, Gift of the Earthmother is replaced by Bloom (a heal equal to 100 percent of your Spirit when Rejuvenation or Regrowth expires), and Rend and Tear rises to 15 percent.
Rogue
Murder, Quietus, Cutthroat, Thousand Cuts and Improved Distract are removed. New talents build around the new Shank ability: Flash of Steel, Boot Knife and Venom, which is now a passive. Death Mark is a new 1-point finisher in row 7. Relentless Strikes becomes a 5-point talent and Dual Wield Specialization a 2-point one at 50 percent off-hand damage.
Warrior
Flurry drops to 3 points at 10/20/30 percent attack speed and no longer needs Death Wish; Bloodthirst now does. New Fury talents are Reckless Swings and Improved Whirlwind. Defiance’s threat rises to 20 percent at max rank.
Mage, Priest, Hunter and Warlock
Mage loses Piercing Ice and Arcane Focus, and Ice Barrier now adds 15 percent Frost damage for a minute. Critical Mass goes back to 3 points. Priest loses Binding Heal for Holy Binding. Hunter’s Barrage rises to 15 percent and Lightning Reflexes to 15 percent Agility. Warlock’s Shadow and Flame doubles to 20 percent, and Wrack’s spell damage coefficient doubles.
Paladin is the worked example: a tank seal, light group healing and a new seal-twisting talent
Blizzard used Paladin to show the talent philosophy on stage, and it is the class that changed most. Protection is a real tank spec built on the new Seal of Fury, whose Judgement taunts from 10 yards. Holy gets group healing through Light’s Vigil. Retribution got Sacred Arbiter at 16 points for group utility.
The Protection tree at launch centers on Swift Judgement, Templar’s Bulwark (an 8 second absorb equal to 100 percent of your max health) and the new row 7 Shieldsworn, which turns Holy Strike into a shield strike.

Respec at a city class trainer, and unlock a second spec at level 40
Spend your first point at level 10
Talents start at 10, the same level Paladins now get Righteous Fury and Seal of Fury.
Plan around 11, 16, 21 and 31
Each is a single-point talent that changes how you play. A build that stops at 16 points in a second tree still gets a defining talent.
Respec in a capital
Visit your class trainer in a major city. Legacy talents are changed there too.
Unlock Dual Specialization at 40
Keep a leveling or damage spec and a dungeon spec, and swap between them.
Recheck after patches
The final beta notes moved many talents. Read every tooltip again after each tuning pass.
FAQ
Are the talent trees different in WoW Forever?
Yes, but the shape is the same. Every class keeps three seven-row trees with one-point talents at 11, 21 and 31, plus a new one at 16. Many talents are unchanged from 2006, buff-only talents are now baseline, and new talents fill their slots.
How many talent trees are there?
27, three for each of the nine classes. Blizzard’s goal is for all 27 to be worth bringing to a dungeon or raid.
What is the 16-point talent?
A new one-point “gold medal” talent at 16 points in every tree. Examples include Swift Judgement for Protection Paladins, Spearing Strike for Arms Warriors and Summon Hawk for Beast Mastery Hunters.
When do you get talent points?
From level 10.
Is there dual spec in WoW Forever?
Yes. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40.
Where do you reset talents?
At your class trainer in a major city, which also handles Legacy talents.
Why does my talent guide not match the game?
Blizzard’s November 2 notes removed or moved dozens of talents, including Twist of Light, Lava Burst, Berserk and Improved Seal of Fury. Anything written before then may be out of date.
