Leaked trailer reveals Mass Effect Universe, the game EA just cancelled

A day after EA shut down BioWare, a trailer for the cancelled Mass Effect Universe leaked. Jason Schreier has confirmed it is real.

One day after EA shut down BioWare and cancelled the next Mass Effect, the first look at that game showed up anyway. A trailer for it, title card and all, was posted to the Mass Effect subreddit today by an anonymous account. It is real. The game was called Mass Effect Universe.

Games reporter Jason Schreier, who has covered BioWare for years, confirmed it on Bluesky: “Can confirm that this is a real trailer of the Mass Effect game that BioWare was developing up until its closure yesterday.” EA has not commented.

What the trailer shows

The video runs about two minutes and opens with a note that it is in-engine footage made with pre-production assets. So this is not a finished game, and it was never meant to be seen in this state. It still looks like Mass Effect.

A man in an N7 trench coat meets an asari in a bar. He tells her he used to be in the Alliance military and is now in a “new line of work.” It goes wrong, as bar meetings in Mass Effect tend to, and after an action sequence the asari turns on him. Then Liara T’Soni steps out, and the scene ends in a biotic bar fight. The title card reads Mass Effect Universe. The very last one says Coming Soon.

That is a new lead, not Shepard, in a galaxy that still has room for Liara. It is the kind of setup BioWare spent years hinting at, and the first real look anyone outside the studio got at what the team was actually building.

Why it hurts more than it helps

Yesterday the story was a line item: about 50 people, one studio, part of 400 jobs. Today there is footage. A team that small does not get a trailer this polished by accident. Somebody storyboarded that bar, lit it, cut it, and was presumably waiting for the right moment to show it. With N7 Day on November 7, it is not hard to guess when that moment might have been.

Instead, the first time fans saw Mass Effect Universe was as a leak, the morning after it died. We don’t know who posted it or why. Either way, it lands like a last word for the people who made it: this existed, it looked good, and it was cancelled anyway.

Leaked trailers for cancelled games usually turn up years later, once nobody can be hurt by them. This one took a day.

What happens now

Probably nothing, at least not for this game. A pre-production trailer does not change the debt maths that closed the studio, and EA still owns Mass Effect whether or not anyone is making one. Expect the video to start disappearing from mirrors as takedown requests go out. The trailer embedded above is the original post, and it will be around for as long as that is.

The 2020 teaser for this game ended on a promise: Mass Effect will continue. For two minutes today, it did.
