  • Oath of Darkness Earring: Complete the Blummont Mana quest in Hernand, steal the earring from the locked box in the noble’s bedroom using a mask from the black market.
  • Horse Upgrades: Grab the Delmare saddle and silver horseshoe southeast of Fernand, then complete the fishing quest for the Hernandian Champron and stirrups.

  • Caner Armor Pieces: Beat Matias in Hernand Square to unlock his armor set in Rhett’s shop for missing pieces.
  • Engraved Gold Earring: Parkour into Lion Crest Mana’s side window, solve the lockbox puzzle, steal the earring with your mask.
  • Two-Handed Sword: Grab the sword stuck in the ground south of Hernand Castle at the crossroads—it’s free and excellent for 20+ hours.
  • Kite Shield: Build Rhett’s trust to 100 by greeting him daily or completing his quests, then buy his kite shield.
  • Upgrade Everything to Level 4: Use iron, copper ore, cloth, and wood at the smithy—this is your power spike, not new gear.

What This Guide Helps You Do

This guide shows you how to assemble a complete early-game armor set, collect two powerful earrings, upgrade your horse, find an excellent two-handed sword, and acquire a matching shield—all before 30 hours of playtime. The payoff: a massive stat boost, better survivability in early fights and bosses, and a character that actually looks cohesive instead of mismatched starting gear.

It’s best for players who’ve just started Crimson Desert and are getting frustrated by brutal early combat, or anyone who wants to optimize their gear and appearance without grinding for hours.

Requirements & Prep

  • Main Story Progress: You need to reach the point where you can access Hernand and wear Hernandian clothing (given as part of early main story).
  • Black Market Access: You’ll need to buy a mask from the black market vendor to steal items. This vendor is located near the Blummont Mana.
  • Hernand Contribution: Build up to at least 4 contribution points by completing life skill quests from the notice board and doing bounties. Higher contribution (6+) unlocks more armor options.
  • Materials for Upgrades: Stock up on iron ore, copper ore, cloth, and wood. You can gather these in the open world or buy them from vendors throughout the map.
  • Rhett’s Trust: You’ll need 100 trust with Rhett to buy his kite shield. Greeting him daily gives 5 trust; quests and gifts speed this up.
Pro Tip:
Optional but Helpful: Do the life skill quests early—they teach you the game’s systems and give inventory expansions as rewards, which you’ll need for all these materials.

Route Overview

The early power spike route is designed to be picked up organically as you progress through the main story. You’ll start by claiming two earrings from locked boxes in manors (one accessible immediately after your first sky island, the other once you can reach Lion Crest). At the same time, upgrade your horse with saddle pieces found southeast of Fernand and unlocked via a fishing quest. Your armor comes from two sources: the Hernand contribution vendor (which requires you to build reputation through quests and bounties) and Rhett’s shop (unlocked after beating Matias in Hernand Square). The centerpiece weapon—a two-handed sword stuck in the ground—is a free pickup south of Hernand Castle that’ll carry you for 20+ hours. Finally, you’ll earn Rhett’s trust to buy a matching shield. Once you’ve got all these pieces, the real power spike happens at the smithy: upgrade everything to level 4 using basic materials, and you’ll be dramatically stronger than your starting gear.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Claim Your First Earring: Oath of Darkness from Blummont Mana

After completing your first sky island, head to the Blummont Mana in Hernand near the main square. Talk to the NPC to start the quest—he’ll direct you to Robert’s caretaker on the farm area outside. Speak to that NPC, and you’ll be tasked with clearing out a nearby cabin full of bandits. It’s a straightforward combat encounter; just take them out and return to complete the quest.

Once the quest is done, you can enter the Blummont Mana. Head inside and speak with the noble to complete the quest reward step. Now comes the sneaky part: take the door to the left into his bedroom. The room is empty, so you’re completely safe here. You’ll find a locked box with a puzzle. The puzzle requires you to press buttons to rotate tiles and reveal a full owl image. If you get stuck, check the solution shown in the video, but the concept is straightforward rotation.

Once the box is open, you’ll see the Oath of Darkness earring inside. You can’t simply take it—you need to steal it. If you haven’t already, head to the black market vendor near the Blummont Mana and buy a mask. Put the mask on, and the theft timer will begin. Grab the earring and wait for the steal timer to finish before leaving. Since no one is in the bedroom, you’ll complete the theft safely.

Watch For: The steal timer is real. Don’t panic and leave early—wait for it to finish so you don’t trigger a theft alert.

Upgrade Your Horse: Saddle & Horseshoes

Travel southeast of Fernand to find a horse saddle vendor on the map. You can pick up two items here: the Delmare saddle and the silver horseshoe. These give your horse more HP, more attack, and faster stamina regeneration. Open your inventory and equip them to your horse immediately—it’s a quality-of-life upgrade that matters for all the traveling you’ll do.

To push the horse upgrades even further, pick up the fishing side quest from the notice board in Hernand. This quest sends you to another saddler vendor northwest of Hernand. The vendor will give you a fishing rod and ask you to catch some fish. Fish in the water near the starting area—it’s quick and easy. Once you’ve caught the fish, return to the vendor and complete the quest. This unlocks the Hernandian Champron and stirrups for purchase from this vendor. Buy both and equip them to your horse. You’ve now got a fully kitted-out horse with better attack, health, and stamina recovery.

Build Hernand Contribution for Bolton Plate Armor

The strongest early armor set comes from the Hernand contribution vendor, but you’ll need to build reputation first. Complete life skill quests from the notice board, do bounties, and progress main story quests in Hernand. Each of these activities builds your contribution score. Your goal is to reach 4 contribution (minimum for basic armor) or higher (6+ unlocks more options).

Once you’ve hit at least 4 contribution, head to the Hernand contribution vendor. This vendor is located inside a building just to the right when you pass through the main gate. Important: You must be wearing Hernandian clothing to pass through the gate. If you don’t have it yet, progress the main story a bit more—it’s given as part of early progression.

At the contribution vendor, buy the Bolton plate armor, cloak, and helmet. These pieces are incredibly strong and’ll last you 30 to 40 hours of gameplay, especially if you upgrade them. At minimum, grab the plate armor and cloak—they look excellent and provide solid stats.

Complete the Matias Fight to Unlock Caner Armor

Progress the main story for about an hour or two until you reach Hernand Square and fight Matias. This is a story-required combat encounter. Once you defeat him, the Caner armor set becomes available in Rhett’s shop. This is key: you can now mix and match pieces between the Bolton armor (from contribution) and the Caner armor (from Rhett) to complete a full set without spending more contribution points.

For example, if you bought the Bolton plate armor and cloak from the contribution vendor, grab the Caner gloves, boots, and helmet from Rhett’s shop to round out the set. This gives you a cohesive, strong-looking armor set early in the game.

Steal Your Second Earring: Engraved Gold from Lion Crest Mana

Head to the Lion Crest Mana on the map. If you’re not far enough into the main story, the guards will stop you at the entrance—but you don’t need to go through the front. Instead, swing around to the right side of the building. Use parkour to climb up the side wall. You’ll find an open window; climb through it. This puts you inside one of the main rooms.

Once inside, head left to the door. The next room contains another locked box puzzle. This puzzle works the same way as the first: move tiles to complete the image. The solution is shown in the video if you get stuck. Open the box to reveal the Engraved Gold Earring. Just like before, put on your mask and steal it—the room is empty, so you’re safe. Wait for the steal timer to finish before leaving.Parkour Climbing Tip: If you’re having trouble with the wall climb, take your time. The finicky climbing section is just part of the route to the window—don’t rush it.

Grab the Free Two-Handed Sword South of Hernand Castle

Travel south of Hernand Castle to a crossroads on the map. You’ll see a two-handed sword literally stuck in the ground. Yes, you can just take it. This is one of the best early two-handed weapons in the game: it looks cool, has great stats, and most importantly, it’s got plenty of sockets for upgrades later. You’ll be able to use this sword for at least 20+ hours, and it lasts even longer if you invest in upgrades.

Build Rhett’s Trust to 100 for the Kite Shield

To get the kite shield from Rhett, you’ll need to build his trust to 100. The easiest method is to greet him every day—each greeting gives 5 trust, so you’ll hit 100 in 20 days of in-game time. To speed this up, complete his quests and give him gifts, which grant larger trust bonuses.

Once you hit 100 trust, check the bottom of Rhett’s shop inventory. The kite shield will be available for purchase. This shield fits perfectly with the Bolton/Caner armor set visually—it’s got a blue theme that matches the plate armor. It’s also solid on stats, making it a practical and aesthetic choice.

Fill Remaining Slots with Dropped Accessories

At this point, you’ve got two earrings, a full armor set, a two-handed sword, and a shield. You’re still missing rings and necklaces. Don’t worry about hunting for specific ones—these drop commonly from bandits. Go out and fight some bandits to fill these remaining accessory slots naturally as you progress.

Builds & Loadouts

The Complete Early Power Spike Build

  • Head: Caner Helmet (or Bolton Helmet if you prefer the contribution vendor’s look)
  • Chest: Bolton Plate Armor
  • Back: Bolton Cloak
  • Hands: Caner Gloves
  • Legs: Caner Boots
  • Weapon (Right Hand): Two-Handed Sword (found south of Hernand Castle)
  • Weapon (Left Hand): Kite Shield (Rhett’s shop, 100 trust)
  • Earrings: Oath of Darkness (Blummont Mana) + Engraved Gold (Lion Crest Mana)
  • Rings/Necklaces: Fill with drops from bandits as you encounter them
  • Horse Saddle: Delmare Saddle + Hernandian Champron + Silver Horseshoe + Hernandian Stirrups

This build is cohesive, looks great, and provides solid stats across the board. The two-handed sword is your main damage dealer, and the shield gives you survivability. The armor set is designed to be upgraded together, so all your materials go toward pieces that work in harmony.

If You’re Under-Geared: You can start this route even earlier by grabbing just the Oath of Darkness earring and the two-handed sword. These two items alone will give you a noticeable early boost. Build toward the full set as you progress.

Upgrade Path to Level 4: The Real Power Spike

Here’s the critical part that many players miss: don’t craft new gear. Upgrade what you’ve got. Once you’ve collected all the pieces above, head to the smithy and refine each piece to level 4. This is where the actual power spike happens.

Level 4 Upgrade Costs (Typical):

  • Armor pieces (plate, helmet, gloves, boots): Iron ore and copper ore
  • Cloak and shield: Cloth and wood (in addition to ore)
  • Weapon: Iron ore and copper ore

You can gather these materials in the open world or buy them from vendors throughout the map. Once each piece reaches level 4, the next tier of upgrades requires abyss materials—these are better saved for skill points, so level 4 is the sweet spot to stop.

The difference between unupgraded and level 4 gear is dramatic. Your survivability jumps, your damage increases, and you’ll breeze through encounters that felt brutal before.

Troubleshooting & Common Mistakes

  • Can’t steal the earrings: You need a mask from the black market vendor. Buy one before attempting to steal. The vendor is near the Blummont Mana.
  • Guards won’t let me into Lion Crest Mana: You’re not far enough in the story. Come back later, or use the parkour route around the side and through the window instead of the front entrance.
  • Can’t enter Hernand or buy from the contribution vendor: You need Hernandian clothing, which is given as part of the main story. Progress the story further.
  • Rhett won’t sell me the kite shield: You need 100 trust. Greet him daily (5 trust per greeting) or complete his quests. Check the very bottom of his shop inventory once you hit 100.
  • I’m stuck on the lockbox puzzles: Both puzzles are rotation-based. Rotate tiles to complete the image shown. The video shows the solutions if you need a reference.
  • I’m upgrading new gear instead of my current set: Stop. Upgrade the pieces you just collected to level 4 instead. New gear won’t be better than these items for a long time.
  • My horse doesn’t feel any different: Make sure you’ve equipped all four horse pieces (saddle, champron, stirrups, horseshoe) to your horse in your inventory. Just picking them up doesn’t equip them.

Advanced Tips & Time Saves

  • Parallel Progress: While building Hernand contribution, also work on Rhett’s trust. Greeting Rhett daily takes seconds and stacks toward the 100 trust goal without slowing your main progression.
  • Material Farming: Once you know you’re upgrading to level 4, gather iron and copper ore while doing bounties or story quests. Don’t make it a separate farming run—multitask.
  • Skip the Lockbox Puzzles If Stuck: The earrings are nice, but the two-handed sword and armor set are the core power spike. If you’re frustrated with the puzzles, grab those first and come back to the earrings later.
  • Don’t Hoard Materials: Spend your iron, copper, cloth, and wood on upgrades immediately. You’ll farm more as you progress, and the power boost from level 4 gear is worth the resource investment.

FAQ

Q: Can I get this gear if I’m not very far into the story?

A: Mostly yes. The two-handed sword and horse upgrades are accessible very early. The earrings require you to be past your first sky island and able to reach Lion Crest (story-dependent). The armor set requires Hernandian clothing from the main story. You don’t need to be far, just past the early opening sequence.

Q: How long does it take to get all of this?

A: If you’re actively pursuing these items, you can have most of it within 10-15 hours. The Rhett trust grind takes the longest (20 days of in-game time if you only greet him), but you can speed it up with quests and gifts. The whole setup should be complete by 30 hours easily.

Q: Do I need to steal the earrings, or can I just take them?

A: You must steal them. The game won’t let you simply take them from the locked boxes. You need a mask from the black market vendor to initiate the steal action.

Q: Should I upgrade my gear or save materials for something else?

A: Upgrade to level 4 immediately. The power boost is worth it, and you’ll farm more materials as you progress. Don’t hoard—the stat increase from level 4 gear makes everything easier.

Q: What if I don’t like the way this armor looks?

A: You can mix and match pieces between Bolton and Caner armor. The guide suggests a cohesive set, but you can pick different pieces if you prefer the aesthetics. The stats are similar across both sets at this tier.

Q: Can I use a different weapon instead of the two-handed sword?

A: You can, but this sword is free, has great stats, and lasts for 20+ hours. It’s hard to beat for an early weapon. If you find something better later, swap it out, but don’t sleep on this one.
