A24’s Elden Ring movie now costs nearly $200 million, almost triple its old record

The figure is far above the "well over $100 million" reported when Alex Garland's film started shooting in April. It opens March 3, 2028.

A24’s Elden Ring movie costs nearly $200 million to make, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter. That makes Alex Garland’s adaptation of FromSoftware’s game by far the most expensive film the studio has ever made.

Nearly $200 million, almost triple A24’s old record

A24’s previous most expensive film was Marty Supreme, at a reported $70 million. Elden Ring comes in at close to three times that.

It is also a big jump from what was reported in April, when filming started in the UK: a budget of “well over” $100 million. A24 has not commented on the figure, and the Journal’s number comes from unnamed sources rather than the studio.

The Elden Ring movie opens March 3, 2028

Garland, the director of Ex Machina, Annihilation and Civil War, is writing and directing. The film is made with Bandai Namco and is set for IMAX release on March 3, 2028.

The cast, revealed in April, includes Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Nick Offerman, Kit Connor, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird and Peter Serafinowicz.

A24 is betting bigger after a strong year

The budget came out in a wider Journal piece on A24’s run at the box office this year, led by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary, You Can See Everything. The studio has said it wants to make bigger films, and Elden Ring, which has sold more than 30 million copies, is the biggest of them so far.
